Job Summary

The Director, Student Engagement and Wellness provides leadership, coordination, and oversight for comprehensive student engagement, wellness, mental health promotion, student activities, leadership development, and student success initiatives. The position serves as an advisor and resource for the Student Government Association (SGA), coordinates major campus events and engagement activities, and consults with faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders regarding student engagement, wellbeing, and student success. The Director develops collaborative strategies to address barriers that may affect students’ academic progress and overall college experience.

Essential Duties
Student Engagement and Campus Life
  • Provide leadership and oversight for campus engagement initiatives and student activities programming.
  • Directly facilitate and manage co-curricular student activity programs and events related to the Student Government Association (SGA), student clubs and organizations, and student leadership.
  • Serve as advisor to the Student Government Association and support the development of student leaders.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate student leadership development programs.
  • Promote student participation in clubs, organizations, leadership opportunities, and campus activities.
  • Plan, coordinate, and facilitate large-scale campus programs, including Welcome Week and other student engagement events.
  • Develop community service, volunteer, mentoring, and leadership opportunities for students.
  • Develop a diverse array of in-person, virtual, and online programming designed to encourage participation among a broad spectrum of students.
  • Work with campus leadership to identify vendors and coordinate contracts for campus programs and events.
  • Manage assigned budgets and review and approve student event programming contracts.
  • Establish and enforce policies, procedures, and guidelines related to student activities, events, operations, and customer service.
Mental Health Wellness Program Oversight
  • Provide administrative leadership and coordination for campus counseling and mental health-related programs and initiatives.
  • Support crisis response protocols and institutional processes related to student wellbeing.
  • Promote early identification and appropriate referral of students who may need counseling, behavioral health, or other specialized services.
  • Advise the Vice President, Student Development regarding campus mental health and wellness trends, services, outreach, prevention, and student support needs.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality when handling student information and sensitive matters.
  • Ensure that counseling and wellness programs operate in accordance with applicable College policies, professional standards, and legal requirements.
Additional Duties
  • Serve on various committees.
  • Provide educational workshops and presentations for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Represent the College at community and professional events related to student engagement, wellness, mental health promotion, and student success.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide direct supervision and leadership to assigned student engagement, student success, wellness, accessibility, career, and/or related Student Development personnel, as assigned. Directs activities of the Student Government Association and other student leaders.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in student personnel, education, educational leadership, counseling, psychology, social work, human services, higher education, student affairs, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution. Master's degree preferred.
  • Three (3) or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in student affairs, student engagement, student success, counseling/wellness administration, higher education, or a related field.
Licenses and Certificates

Professional licensure in counseling, psychology, social work, or another appropriate mental health field is preferred but not required.

Specialized Training

Preferred training or demonstrated competency in one or more of the following:

  • Mental health and wellness promotion
  • Crisis intervention
  • Trauma-informed practices
  • Conflict resolution
  • Program assessment and evaluation
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience using Colleague and experience within the North Carolina Community College System.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills.
  • Organizational skills and ability to self-manage time.
  • Skilled in computers, problem solving, and communication.
  • Ability to build consensus among staff and peers.
Physical Demands

This job requires continuously talking or hearing, frequently standing, frequently walking, frequently reaching with hands and arms, frequently gripping, or feeling with hands, typing/repetitive movement, occasionally climbing or balancing, occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, occasionally sitting. Occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions

Work primarily, but not exclusively, in a climate-controlled environment with minimal safety/health hazard potential or work hazards; however, there are sometimes stressful conditions.
