NYC Health + Hospitals’ Queens Hospital Center is seeking an experienced leader to oversee Audiology and Speech Therapy services for inpatient and outpatient care, training, education and research. Under the Director of Service, you will formulate policies, develop programs, direct staff, and collaborate with medical and administrative teams to deliver efficient, high‑quality speech and hearing care.

  • Six years experience in Audiology or Speech Therapy, including at least two years in admin/managerial capacity.

  • Plans, directs and coordinates the activities of personnel in Hearing and Speech Therapy and treatment.
  • Develops and formulates policies regarding implementation of practices for Speech Therapy and Audiology care.
  • Collaborates with administration, medical staff and heads of other professional departments in planning Speech Therapy and Audiology care.
  • Formulates research objectives and programs in speech and hearing areas and directs them toward advancing knowledge in Audiology and Speech Therapy.

Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position: Under the general direction of the Director of Service in a hospital center, formulates the policies and practices of and develops the services of Audiology and Speech Therapy for inpatient and outpatient treatment, training, education and research in order to achieve the objectives and effectuation of policy and practice in support and delivery of efficient and effective speech and/or hearing care treatment and diagnosis.

Example Of Typical Tasks
  • Plans, directs and coordinates the activities of personnel in Hearing and Speech Therapy and treatment such as, but not necessarily limited to, testing and treating patients in accordance with established policy and practice.
  • Develops and formulates policies regarding implementation of practices, methods and procedures for Audiology and Speech Therapy program assignments and development such as, but not necessarily limited to, speech and hearing rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation, counseling, guidance and speech reading.
  • Collaborates with administration, medical staff and heads of other professional departments in planning Speech Therapy and Audiology care.
  • Formulates research objectives and programs in speech and hearing areas and directs them toward enhancing knowledge in Audiology, Biophysics and Psychophysics of Auditory Systems and Speech Therapy.
  • Designs clinical research procedures. Directs research findings and reports activities and disseminates to appropriate management levels.
  • Directs and controls diagnostic and rehabilitative services and related research.
  • Formulates, develops, establishes and updates in-service training programs for members of the Speech Therapy and Audiology Departments and related therapeutic teams. Receives feedback and checks progress related to program effectiveness in delivery of speech and hearing care and diagnosis.
  • Conducts conferences and maintains contact with various professional societies to keep current on ideas, exchange information and implement them in the Speech Therapy and Audiology Departments.
  • Organizes the personnel of the Speech Therapy and Audiology Departments into areas of responsibility, authority and specialization, and staffs, directs, guides and controls departmental activity.
  • Evaluates and audits job performance of staff and recommends appropriate personnel action.
  • Develops, plans and implements departmental budget and establishes program priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Doctorate in Audiology or Speech Therapy (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from an accredited university and certification by the American Speech & Hearing Association; and,
  • Three years experience in Audiology or Speech Therapy, of which at least one year performed in an administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or,
  • A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Speech Pathology Therapy and Audiology and certification by the American Speech & Hearing Association; and,
  • Six years experience in Audiology or Speech Therapy, of which at least two years performed in an administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or,
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
