Position Summary

The Director of Respiratory Therapy provides leadership and overall direction for Respiratory Services, ensuring the delivery of high-quality respiratory care and life-support services for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions. This role oversees department operations, staff development, quality and performance improvement, regulatory compliance, and respiratory therapy policies and protocols. The Director serves as a clinical resource and educator for Respiratory Therapy staff and works collaboratively with physicians, the Medical Director, hospital leadership, and other departments to advance respiratory therapy practices and standards of care.

Qualifications

• Education: Graduate of an approved respiratory therapy program.
• Licensure: Current Respiratory Care license in the applicable state of practice.
• Experience: Minimum of three years of experience across cardiopulmonary services.
• Experience: Minimum of one year of previous departmental management experience.
• Knowledge & Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong clinical knowledge of respiratory therapy practices and equipment. Knowledge of applicable accreditation, state health department, peer review, and quality assessment requirements. Ability to lead, educate, and develop respiratory therapy staff. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage clinical, operational, and quality priorities simultaneously.

Transforming the Health of Our Communities

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 195 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who was determined to help women and children in Dublin experiencing poverty. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill that dream. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, one of the first religious orders whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1856, they traveled to St. Louis. In the years to come, they would establish hospitals throughout the Midwest. Many of these would join together in 1986 as Mercy.
