Job summary

The University of Alabama at Birmingham seeks a Director of Research Computing Cyberinfrastructure to lead the university’s research computing services and teams. You will guide compute platforms, storage, networking, and software development to support faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students in publishing impactful work.

You will engage with IT colleagues, manage budgets, and advance security and compliance with policies such as HIPAA and FERPA across the research ecosystem.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Biological or Medical Science, Computer Science, Informatics, or related field, with seven years of related experience in research computing and high performance computing
• Experience managing research computing services and teams; advanced knowledge of research computing systems, software, and practices

Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and operational oversight for the UAB Research Computing System, including compute platforms, storage systems, research networking, and other associated cyberinfrastructure
• Collaborates with enterprise IT colleagues to leverage expertise as needed to support the university's research ecosystem
• Leads and/or directs large cyberinfrastructure projects, working across teams and functions as needed
• Contributes to developing solutions for protecting both open access and regulated research data, adhering to HIPAA and FERPA regulations
• Assists in annual development and oversight of departmental budget and leads the annual equipment inventory process
• Analyzes complex business needs presented by the user community and/or clients and oversees the development of application solutions
• Performs other duties as assigned
