Job summary

Apex Clean Energy is recruiting a Director of Project Finance in Charlottesville, VA. This role leads both strategy and hands-on financial modeling for wind, solar, and storage projects within a 4-person team.

The position blends leadership with technical modeling, requiring deep experience in project finance, tax equity, and related structures. Hybrid work is available with travel up to 5%.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, economics, or a related field; MBA or CFA a plus but not required
• 10+ years of experience in project finance, financial modeling, or valuation
• Demonstrated experience building and defending complex financial models
• Experience managing or mentoring a team of modeling experts
• Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills; familiarity with renewable energy tax credit structures
• Experience with AI as a tool to streamline modeling is a plus
• Strong project management skills and ability to prioritize across a live pipeline
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Customer-service orientation for internal/external requests
• Willingness to travel up to 5%
• Ability to work from headquarters in Charlottesville, VA; hybrid work considered

Responsibilities

• Personally build, structure, and maintain financial models for project finance transactions
• Review, stress-test, and validate models across all active transactions and set standards
• Manage workload, staffing, and mentoring for the analysis team
• Serve as point of contact for deal teams, lenders, and investors on modeling questions
• Present model outputs and economics to executives and committees
• Identify and resolve modeling issues during diligence, negotiation, or closing
• Drive continuous improvement in modeling tools, processes, and controls
• Maintain current knowledge of debt, tax equity, and financing structures
