Job summary

Group 1001 is seeking a Director of Reinsurance Underwriting in Stamford, CT to lead risk evaluation, model setup, and memo drafting for complex reinsurance transactions. The candidate will oversee model reviews, contract analysis, and reserving discussions while contributing to new specialty programs and ERM improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Risk Management.
  • 10+ years of experience in insurance or reinsurance underwriting, operations, actuarial, or related fields.
  • Experience in automobile insurance a plus.
  • Experience within property & casualty insurance or reinsurance is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex data and make informed decisions.
  • Experience with Python or R a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate complex concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn, with a proactive approach to professional development.

Why This Role Matters

The Director of Reinsurance Underwriting plays a crucial role in the growing reinsurance segment, supporting the evaluation and management of reinsurance transactions. This is a fast-paced and challenging position involving the screening and vetting of the transaction pipeline, assessing risk and reward balances, and assisting in the underwriting of both renewal and new transactions. The Director of Reinsurance Underwriting will collaborate with various teams to conduct in-depth analysis, setting up transaction models, reviewing contracts, and assisting in drafting transaction memos. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, risk mindset, and effective communication abilities to excel in this dynamic and challenging role.

This position has a hybrid work schedule of working in RVI's Stamford, CT office two days a week.

How You’ll Contribute
  • Collaborate with team to screen and vet risks. Set up and validate models to quantify risks and rewards. Conduct due diligence and research as necessary.
  • Peer review other actuarial models to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with the team to draft comprehensive transaction memos for reinsurance transactions. Summarize key information, risks, and recommended actions for decision-making.
  • Assist in the review of contracts and trust agreements related to reinsurance transactions.
  • Help review reserving assumptions for certain transactions.
  • Help develop and enhance operations of selected new specialty insurance programs.
  • Collaborate with Risk Management to improve reserving and ERM processes.
  • Contribute to research initiatives aimed at identifying new lines of business.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and provide insights to enhance business strategies.
What We’re Looking for
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science or Risk Management.
  • 10+ years of experience in insurance or reinsurance underwriting, operations, actuarial, or other related fields.
  • Experience in automobile insurance a plus (either personal auto or commercial auto).
  • Experience within property & casualty insurance or reinsurance is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate complex data and make informed decisions.
  • Experience with Python or R a plus.
  • Knowledge of actuarial principles and practices, including risk assessment and pricing methodologies.

Compensation

The total compensation for this position ranges from $170,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $200,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
