Job summary

Group 1001 is seeking an experienced in-house attorney to serve as the primary legal partner for insurance product development, policy wordings, regulatory matters, and day-to-day operations. The role reports to the Deputy General Counsel and supports multiple business lines including underwriting, risk management, and finance.

The candidate should bring 10–15 years of P&C experience, strong drafting skills, and a deep understanding of SERFF and state insurance regulations.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and CT bar or eligibility for CT Authorized House Counsel.
  • Approximately 10–15 years of substantive experience in P&C insurance.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing policy forms, endorsements, and manuscript wordings.
  • Knowledge of SERFF and multi-state filing and approval processes.
  • Strong understanding of state regulatory frameworks and NAIC model laws.

Responsibilities

Summary

RVI Group, a growing company with a broad portfolio of specialty insurance products, reinsurance, financial solutions, and analytical services, is seeking an experienced in-house attorney to serve as a primary legal partner for insurance product development, insurance policy wordings, regulatory matters, and day-to-day insurance operations. This role combines deep product and insurance policy-wording expertise with broad in-house insurance responsibilities spanning claims, regulatory, compliance, and corporate matters.

Reporting directly to the Deputy General Counsel, this attorney will join a lean, high-impact legal team supporting RVI’s business lines and will work closely with Underwriting, Risk Management, Finance, Claims, Compliance, and other key stakeholders.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as the legal lead for new insurance product development initiatives, partnering closely with Underwriting, Risk Management, Finance, Claims, Compliance and other business stakeholders.
  • Draft and review insurance policy forms, endorsements, and manuscript wordings for specialty P&C and residual value insurance products.
  • Manage and enhance the policy wordings library, including templates, endorsements, version control, and related documentation across product lines.
  • Manage multi-state form and rate filings through SERFF, including filing strategy, preparation, responses to regulatory objections, and approval tracking.
  • Advise on states’ insurance regulatory requirements and licensing considerations for new products and geographic expansion for admitted and surplus lines business.
  • Coordinate with outside regulatory counsel on complex multi-state approvals, novel product structures, and other specialized regulatory matters.
  • Monitor emerging coverage trends, ISO circulars, and industry developments and assess their implications for product and wordings strategy.
  • Advise on state insurance regulatory matters, including licensing and related compliance obligations.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting existing and planned product lines and provide practical guidance to business stakeholders.
  • Coordinate regulatory filings with the Regulatory Specialist and Finance team.
  • Provide guidance on NAIC model laws/regulations, state adoption, and emerging regulatory frameworks.
Corporate, Claims & General In-House Support
  • Support the continued development of RVI’s claims function, including claims-related legal and coverage matters.
  • Prepare vendor agreements, service contracts, NDAs, and other business arrangement agreements.
  • Contribute to the development of legal infrastructure, including templates, policies, and process improvements that enhance the effectiveness and scalability of the legal function.
  • Provide practical, day-to-day legal guidance to business teams on a broad range of insurance and operational matters.
Required Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active bar membership in Connecticut or eligibility and willingness to obtain Connecticut Authorized House Counsel status.
  • Approximately 10–15 years of substantive legal experience in P&C insurance, with meaningful depth in insurance product development and policy wordings.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and reviewing policy forms, endorsements, and manuscript wordings.
  • Working knowledge of SERFF and multi-state insurance form and rate filing and approval processes.
  • Practical knowledge of P&C insurance policy coverage analysis, interpretation, and claims management.
  • Strong familiarity with state insurance regulatory frameworks, and NAIC model laws and regulations.
  • Ability and willingness to provide generalist in-house legal support across claims, regulatory, compliance, and corporate matters.
Preferred Qualifications
  • In-house experience with a specialty P&C insurance carrier, reinsurer, MGA, or MGU.
  • Experience with specialty lines, program business, fronting arrangements, and/or reinsurance.
  • Prior law firm experience in an insurance regulatory, transactional, or coverage practice.
  • Experience partnering with actuarial, underwriting, claims, finance, and product management functions on cross-disciplinary initiatives.
  • Familiarity with corporate policy development and enterprise compliance frameworks.
  • Exposure to Bermuda or offshore insurance and reinsurance operations.

Location & Work Arrangement
  • Candidates able to work on a hybrid basis from the company’s Stamford, Connecticut office.
  • Highly qualified “remote plus” candidates who can work from the Stamford office approximately 2–3 days per month may also be considered.
  • Occasional additional travel may be required for industry conferences and other business needs.
Compensation

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several U.S. geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $200,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $230,000/year plus bonus in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
