Job summary

Church Pension Group in New York, NY, invites an experienced leader to head the PMO as Director. You will develop Project Managers, set standards, govern delivery, and align strategic initiatives with organizational priorities.

The role requires 8+ years in project management, a BA/BS, PMP or equivalent, and a proven track record building PMOs. Hybrid work with on-site in Midtown Manhattan, and a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required in a relevant field; PMP preferred; PgMP or related certification and master's degree preferred.
• 8+ years of progressive project management experience, including complex cross-functional projects.
• 3+ years managing, coaching, or developing Project Managers.

Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.

The Director of the Project Management Office (PMO) leads CPG's project management function, develops Project Managers, strengthens PMO standards and tools, and ensures strategic projects are planned, governed, resourced, and delivered in alignment with organizational priorities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Team Leadership and Talent Development

• Lead, coach, and develop Project Managers, including employees and contingent workers; set expectations, performance standards, and development plans.
• Build a collaborative, accountable, high-performing PMO culture and support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and workforce planning.

Project Delivery Oversight and Governance

• Oversee project execution, governance, documentation, controls, and delivery performance to ensure projects are delivered with clear ownership, disciplined oversight, and measurable progress.
• Ensure consistent use of PMO methodologies, standards, tools, planning practices, risk management, change control, and communications across strategic projects.
• Coach Project Managers through complex delivery challenges, escalations, and recovery planning.

Portfolio and Resource Partnership

• Partner with Enterprise Portfolio and Resource Management to translate organizational priorities into executable plans, align capacity and capabilities, and support portfolio-level decisions.
• Provide visibility into delivery trends, dependencies, risks, resource constraints, skill gaps, and impacts to timelines or outcomes.

PMO Standards, Financial Management, and Continuous Improvement

• Develop and continuously improve PMO processes, templates, tools, lifecycle standards, project health measures, and delivery reporting.
• Manage project budgets, forecasts, variances, financial controls, risks, and escalations to support delivery within approved parameters.
• Serve as a trusted advisor and escalation point for sponsors, business leaders, stakeholders, and functional teams.
• Effective performance of the essential functions of this position requires regular in-person, on-site interaction with colleagues, both for purposes of relationship building and meaningful collaboration.
• Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of project management methodologies, tools, delivery standards, financial management, risk management, scheduling, resource management, and change control.
• Demonstrated ability to coach and develop Project Managers, communicate effectively, solve problems, manage competing priorities, and influence in a matrixed environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Project Management, Information Technology, or related field required; PMP preferred; PgMP or relevant certification and master's degree preferred.
• 8+ years of progressive project management experience, including complex cross-functional projects
• 3+ years managing, coaching, or developing Project Managers.
• Experience establishing or maturing a PMO, partnering with portfolio and resource management functions, and using project management platforms to support visibility and accountability.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Currently, hybrid work environment, which requires working in CPG's office Tuesdays through Thursdays and flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Salary Range: $200,000- $230,000
