Job description

At DICK’S Sporting Goods, we believe in how positively sports can change lives. On our team, everyone plays a critical role in creating confidence and excitement by personally equipping all athletes to achieve their dreams. We are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workforce, reflecting the communities we serve.

Overview

DICK’S Sporting Goods operates more than 800 retail stores, five distribution centers, and a Corporate/Customer Support Center in Pittsburgh. Headquartered in Pittsburgh, DICK’S also owns and operates Golf Galaxy, House of Sport, GameChanger and Foot Locker.

The company delivers products through a dynamic eCommerce platform that is fully integrated with its store network, providing athletes with the convenience and expertise of a 24/7 shopping experience.

As part of its broader enterprise transformation, DICK’S is investing in a data-driven approach to modernizing how inventory is forecasted, allocated, and fulfilled across stores, distribution centers, and digital channels. This initiative focuses on building intelligent decision-making capabilities leveraging predictive analytics, optimization models, and real-time data to improve forecast accuracy, optimize inventory flow, and drive enterprise-wide decisions that support profitable growth and enhance the athlete experience.

The Role

This is a unique opportunity to serve as a strategic legal advisor to enterprise Product, Technology, Data, and Operations teams. The role provides practical counsel on large-scale merchandising, inventory optimization, and digital transformation initiatives.

You will support one of DICK’S Sporting Goods’ most significant enterprise transformation efforts, helping shape the future of retail operations, inventory management, and omnichannel commerce. This is a high-visibility role at the intersection of AI, data, and operations, with direct impact on how DICK’S optimizes inventory and delivers for athletes.

You will partner with senior leaders to shape governance and risk frameworks for emerging technologies, while influencing a business-critical initiative from the ground up.

Working across law, technology, data, operations, and business strategy, you will act as the legal architect for innovative solutions that redefine how products move through DICK’S ecosystem. You will support the full lifecycle of product and technology development, including innovation, data governance, AI adoption, enterprise systems, and commercial transactions.

This role also requires advising on legal, regulatory, and operational risks related to technology, data, pricing, and AI, while enabling business objectives through pragmatic risk management. You will negotiate complex agreements, support enterprise governance frameworks, and collaborate cross-functionally with Privacy, Regulatory, IP, Brand, and Commercial Legal teams to deliver integrated legal guidance and scalable processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Product & Technology Counseling
    • Partner with Data, Technology, and Operations teams on enterprise product and transformation initiatives, particularly across merchandising, buy planning, and inventory optimization.
    • Provide legal guidance throughout the full lifecycle of product and technology development—from design through deployment and governance.
    • Advise on enterprise systems, data architecture, and merchandising platforms.
    • Help balance innovation, operational priorities, and risk management.
  • AI, Data Governance & Pricing
    • Advise on responsible AI/ML and emerging technologies, including model governance, data usage, and vendor tools.
    • Counsel on pricing laws, including algorithmic and multi-state requirements.
    • Support enterprise data governance frameworks, including data ownership, usage, and data-sharing structures.
  • Commercial & Vendor Management
    • Negotiate and draft technology and commercial agreements related to SaaS, data, professional services, and emerging technologies.
    • Manage outside counsel, consulting partners, and third-party stakeholders.
    • Identify and mitigate legal and operational risks in technology and data initiatives.
    • Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting data and technology.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
    • Serve as a day-to-day legal partner to product, technology, and operations stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with Privacy, Regulatory, IP, Brand, and Commercial Legal teams to provide aligned guidance.
    • Support strategic planning tied to enterprise technology and operational transformation.
    • Build scalable legal playbooks, intake processes, and risk frameworks.
Qualifications
  • Required:
    • Juris Doctor (JD) and active U.S. bar admission; eligible for in-house registration in Pennsylvania
    • 6+ years of experience in technology, product, data, or commercial transactions
    • Experience advising product and engineering teams in fast-paced environments
    • Working knowledge of one or more of the following:
      • AI/ML legal issues
      • Pricing and consumer protection law
      • Data governance and privacy
      • Complex SaaS and technology contracting
  • Preferred
    • Experience in retail, eCommerce, or consumer products industries
    • Experience supporting large-scale transformation programs
    • Familiarity with supply chain, merchandising, or inventory systems
    • Experience working with consulting firms and cross-functional leadership teams
