Job summary

National Grid Ventures is seeking a Director, Power Engineering Development to lead the power generation engineering group across front-end design and development for NGV US. Hybrid work options include Waltham, MA, Boston, MA, or Brooklyn, NY.

You will drive technical standards, engage OEMs, and support commercial teams while guiding projects from concept through to commissioning. Travel 40%–50% across the US is required. Strong leadership and energy domain expertise are essential.

National Grid Ventures is hiring a Director, Power Engineering Development. This is a hybrid position that can be based out of our Waltham MA, Boston MA, or Brooklyn NY office.

Job Purpose
  • Establish and Lead NGV's power generation engineering group focused on early development phases, front-end engineering designs and technical solutions necessary to enable and support NGV US large load business growth.
  • Establish and Lead power engineering in gas powered generation technologies, batteries, solar or wind, and as needed, other emerging technologies
  • Develop technical knowledge and relationships with key Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and delivery suppliers to provide NGV US with a robust and credible position amongst suppliers and customers alike.
  • Enable commercial teams to advance and structure customer requirements and prepare full life-lifecycle requirements for working with delivery, commissi0ning, operations and maintenance NGV US teams.
Key Accountabilities
  • Engineering technical solutions for the development and service offerings of behind-the-meter (BTM) and front-of-the-meter (FTM) generation assets - including conventional (natural gas, reciprocating engines, combined cycle), renewable (solar, wind), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) - to meet the unprecedented demand growth driven by large load customers, data centers, and electrification across the nation.
  • Lead the power generation engineering team to develop front-end designs and plans to enable customer solutions in-line with commercial expectations
  • Work seamlessly across Asset Development disciplines as needed, such as Electrical Engineering, Power Quality and Electronics, Transmission Planning, Resourcing, Siting, Permitting, Cost Estimating, Risk and Assurance
  • Work seamlessly with all NGV US Commercial teams to enable and support business plans, customer interfaces, growth targets and other emerging business requirements.
  • Work seamlessly with NGV US support functions such as Legal, Finance, Procurement, Corporate Affairs and Community Stakeholders as needed.
  • Work seamlessly with NGV US existing operating generating plants to incorporate best-in-class operational performance
  • Establish Power Generation technical standards and modular engineering options as possible to achieve best cost performance, procurements, value engineering, resource plans, delivery speed, and ensure proper assurances and plans are in place for a successful delivery.
  • Build / acquire required capabilities within NGV US and appropriate resourcing baseline capacity to support the Commercially developed pipeline for conventional natural gas, renewable, and hybrid (solar + storage, gas + BESS) generation opportunities aligned with NGV's large load commercial strategy.
  • Support project approvals with direct oversight through limited notice to proceed or other key defined milestones, with ongoing involvement as needed through FID, project execution and successful transition from construction to commissi0ning and operations.
  • Participate in customer conversations, as needed by Commercial teams to support the sales and contracting process and build trusted advisor relationships with prospective and existing large load customers.
  • Support stage-gate governance, risk registers, and contingency planning across development milestones (e.g. site control, permitting, interconnection, FID, NTP).
  • Represent NGV US as the technical owner in stakeholder forums as needed.
Qualifications
Experience
  • 15+ years in energy project development with demonstrated leadership across multiple generating asset classes.
  • Strong track record taking generation projects through FEED
  • Track record of working on generation projects through construction, commissi0ning and/or operations, is highly desirable.
  • Direct experience working with key OEMs and suppliers.
  • Experience working for AI, data canter, large industrial load, semi-conductor manufacturing or similar large energy consumption loads is desirable.
  • Experience working in Joint Ventures is desirable.
  • Deep knowledge in one or more generation technologies: combined-cycle and simple-cycle gas turbines, reciprocating engines, solar PV, onshore wind, and BESS.
  • Strong understanding of generation interconnection processes, co-location, and behind-the-meter, front-of-the-meter configurations of one or more regional markets.
  • Knowledge of federal and state large load emerging policies is desirable
  • Strong knowledge of the different contracting models, OEM equipment supply agreements, and major equipment lead times is essential.
  • Knowledge of technical grid services for ancillary markets, capacity constructs, energy, and resource adequacy frameworks.
  • Familiarity with federal and state siting and all relevant permits such as emissions, waste water management and cooling, fire protections and others is essential.
Leadership
  • Proven leadership in complex infrastructure projects with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Leadership presence with the ability to influence internal stakeholders, customers, and external partners.
  • Demonstrable technical credibility and presence, ideally coupled with good commercial acumen
  • Strong partnership and team mindset
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or other power supply related degrees (i.e. nuclear, chemical, civil/environmental); Advanced technical degree or MBA is preferred.
  • Relevant professional certifications (PE, PMP) are highly preferred.

New England MA $211,000 - $248,000 a year

Downstate NY $227,000 - $266,000 a year
