Job summary

The City of Madison seeks a dynamic City Forester to lead the Urban Forestry work unit within the Streets Division. You will oversee care, protection, and expansion of Madison’s urban forest, directing staff and coordinating with staff, elected officials, neighbors, and community groups.

This role requires strong leadership, program development, equity focus, and collaboration with city departments, residents, and partners to safeguard and grow the urban canopy.

Qualifications

• Four (4) years of experience applying methods in planting, pruning, removal, and inspection of shade and ornamental trees.
• Experience managing a forestry program or unit with supervisory responsibilities.
• Bachelor's degree in forestry or related field; ISA certification within six months of hire.
• Valid driver's license and ability to work with diverse communities.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Forestry work unit within the Streets Division and guide urban forest initiatives.
• Direct activities of staff in planning, organizing and implementing unit operations and performance metrics.
• Oversee tree protection, maintenance, removal, and planting programs.
• Manage budgets, grants, and contracts; coordinate with city agencies and community partners.
• Represent the program at meetings, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
