Job Title: Director of Transportation Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Director of Operations Pay Grade: Admin Pay 7

Dept. /School: Transportation Days: 227

Primary Purpose: Provide leadership, direction, and oversight for all district transportation services to ensure safe, efficient, reliable, and equitable transportation of eligible students while supporting the instructional mission of the district. Collaborate with campus administrators, special education, student services, athletics, fine arts, career and technical education, operations, and other departments to provide transportation services that enhance student success, safety, and access to educational opportunities.
Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Certification (TAPT) preferred.
  • ASE School Bus Certification preferred.
  • Texas School Bus Driver Certification preferred

Special Knowledge Skills:

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, including drug testing; effective routing; fleet maintenance; parts/inventory management; quality principles; driving record must meet both the State’s point requirements and the District’s standard for driving district vehicles; must have satisfactory performance in the District’s safety training program; must pass the DOT/District’s Physical Examination yearly
  • Skill in communication and use of computer equipment, including emergency and dispatcher radios.
  • Ability to work with parents and children.
  • Bilingual in English & Spanish preferred

  • Must be able to work independently as well as on a team

Experience:

  • Two years of supervisory experience with public school transportation operations, fleet maintenance, routing, budgeting, personnel, technology, and special education transportation preferred.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide executive leadership for all transportation services.
  • Develop a long-range strategic transportation plan.
  • Establish measurable KPIs for safety, on-time performance, fleet reliability, customer service, driver retention, routing efficiency, and compliance.
  • Use operational data to drive continuous improvement.
  • Serve on the district leadership team.

Transportation Operations

  • Direct safe and efficient transportation operations.
  • Oversee routing, scheduling, transfers, extracurricular transportation, and future planning.
  • Coordinate transportation for Special Education, McKinney-Vento, CTE, Athletics, Fine Arts, and summer programs.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies.

Instructional Support & Campus Collaboration

  • Partner with instructional departments and campus administrators.
  • Maintain regular communication with campuses regarding routing, safety, and discipline.
  • Support attendance initiatives by reducing transportation barriers.

Special Education Leadership

  • Implement transportation accommodations identified in IEPs.
  • Attend ARD meetings when appropriate.
  • Coordinate transportation for medically fragile students.
  • Provide specialized staff training related to disabilities, adaptive equipment, and emergency evacuation.

Student Management

  • Work collaboratively with campuses and Student Services on discipline.
  • Recommend suspension of transportation privileges in accordance with district policy.
  • Analyze discipline trends and develop proactive interventions.

Fleet, Safety & Compliance

  • Oversee preventive maintenance, inspections, fuel, inventory, and fleet replacement.
  • Develop a comprehensive safety program.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance.

Budget, Purchasing & Grants

  • Develop and manage the transportation budget.
  • Oversee procurement of buses, technology, equipment, and contracts.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities.

Technology & Innovation

  • Lead implementation of BusRight, Fleetio, GPS, routing, and parent communication systems.
  • Evaluate new technologies and innovative transportation practices.

Communication & Community Relations

  • Present reports to the Superintendent and Board of Trustees.
  • Build relationships with municipalities, law enforcement, vendors, ESCs, and community organizations.
  • Promote excellent customer service and transparency.

Staff Development

  • Recruit, mentor, and retain employees.
  • Develop succession plans.
  • Provide ongoing professional development.

Emergency Management & Risk

  • Support district emergency planning.
  • Coordinate transportation during disasters and severe weather.
  • Identify and reduce operational risk and liability.

Other Duties

  • Operate district vehicles when necessary.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Director of Operations.
