Job Summary

The Director of the University Writing Center is responsible for coordinating and promoting writing services and programs to address the needs of the University’s residential, commuter, and online student populations.

Founded in 1856, Wilberforce University is America’s first private, coeducational university established to educate men and women of African descent. Today, Wilberforce is a well-respected private, residential liberal arts university with a clear mission, core values, and vision for the future. It is a pioneer in the Co-Operative Education Movement. The university is located in Wilberforce, Ohio, accessible to Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus metropolitan centers, with their social, professional, cultural amenities, and airports.

Position starts August 2025.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Provide leadership for the Writing Instruction Program.
  2. Develop policies and curricula for undergraduate general education composition classes in conjunction with departmental and university writing initiatives.
  3. Conduct training of graduate students, dual credit teachers, and part-time faculty; teach practicum in writing pedagogy.
  4. Recruit, hire, mentor, and evaluate part-time writing faculty.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Evidence of successful teaching.
  • Demonstrated commitment to improving student learning and success at the course and program levels.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to work successfully in a culturally diverse college community.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Ph.D. in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or a related field.
