Role Overview

As a Director of Technology, Enterprise Modernization, you will be responsible for leading Target's enterprise modernization strategy and execution efforts. This team plays a critical role in accelerating Target's long-term technology transformation by creating enterprise-wide clarity, coordinating execution across multiple portfolios, and enabling engineering organizations to modernize legacy platforms and systems at scale.

Unlike traditional engineering leadership roles, success in this position is achieved through influence, collaboration, and execution across distributed teams rather than direct ownership of all engineering delivery. You will lead a team of Technical Program Managers and engineers responsible for defining modernization strategies, driving enterprise-wide alignment, identifying cross‑portfolio dependencies, and solving common challenges that enable engineering teams to move faster.

About You
  • Four-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Business, or equivalent experience
  • 15+ years of technology, engineering, program management, or transformation leadership experience
  • 5+ years of leadership experience managing high‑performing technical teams
  • Experience leading large‑scale technology transformation or modernization initiatives within complex enterprise environments
  • Strong business acumen and ability to connect technology strategy to business outcomes
  • Proven ability to influence and drive execution across teams and organizations without direct authority
  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering practices, platform architectures, cloud technologies, infrastructure, and enterprise systems
  • Experience identifying and managing complex cross‑functional dependencies and risks
  • Excellent communication and executive storytelling skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated success building strong partnerships across Engineering, Product, Infrastructure, Architecture, and Business teams
  • Experience leading teams through organizational change and transformation
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to thrive in ambiguity and create structure where none exists
Preferred Experience
  • Experience leading enterprise modernization or legacy platform transformation initiatives
  • Experience working with distributed global teams
  • Experience in Agile software delivery environments
  • Experience leading Technical Program Management organizations
  • Experience working across multiple technology portfolios in a large‑scale retail or enterprise environment
Work Arrangement

This position may be considered for a Remote or Hybrid (known internally at Target as "Flex for Your Day") work arrangement based on Target's needs.

A Remote work arrangement means the team member works full‑time from home or an alternate location that is not a Target location, does not have a desk at a Target location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.

A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role may be performed either remote or onsite at a Target location depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
