Job summary

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is seeking a Director of Systems Engineering to lead the infrastructure, storage, virtualization, and cloud environments (AWS/Azure). The role guides DevOps, security, and Campus Safety Services while ensuring availability and reliability of critical systems for education and operations.

The position requires strategic leadership, deep technical expertise across Windows and Linux, and a track record of budget management and vendor negotiation.

Qualifications

• 4-year bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or Information Technology, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience, including direct leadership of a systems, infrastructure, or operations team.
• Deep understanding of server, storage, virtualization, and cloud computing technologies across Windows and Linux environments.
• Experience directing DevOps and automation resources against strategic requirements.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive systems strategy aligned with the university's goals and objectives.
• Provide strategic direction for systems operations, storage, cloud, virtualization, and security support, and Campus Safety Services.
• Lead staff development, set performance expectations, and manage workload across the systems team.
• Oversee the design, implementation, and management of physical and virtual server infrastructure and cloud environments (AWS/Azure).
• Ensure documentation, standards compliance, and incident response with SLA adherence.
• Manage DevOps, automation, and process improvement initiatives to reduce toil and improve efficiency.
