Job summary

Denver Public Schools seeks a Director of Special Education to lead district-wide programs for students ages 3–21, ensuring legal, ethical and high-quality services aligned with equity goals. You will supervise staff, manage budgets, develop procedures for identification and placement, and collaborate with families and agencies to ensure compliant, effective education for students with disabilities.

You will drive continuous improvement, lead professional development, and uphold confidentiality

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Education, Special Education or related field required.
• Doctorate preferred.
• Three or more years of management experience in the administration of special education programs.
• Three years of teaching experience in a public school special education setting.
• Colorado Director of Special Education licensure must be active by time of hire.
• Commitment to equity and high-quality education for all students.

Responsibilities

• Implements and maintains special education programs and services for students ages 3-21 following regulations.
• Develops system procedures for identification, evaluation and placement of students with special needs.
• Provides leadership and representation in matters relating to due process safeguards.
• Represents the district with outside agencies and organizations on special education.
• Collaborates with staff, families, teachers and community to plan and evaluate services.
• Oversees recruitment, hiring, supervision, budget management and staff development.
• Facilitates meetings to implement and maintain district programs.
• Keeps knowledge current on special education laws and education methods.
