Job summary

The Natural History Museum of Utah seeks an accomplished scientist and leader to serve as Director of Science. This senior role provides strategic direction for the Collections & Research Department, guiding research programs, collections stewardship, and field activities in alignment with NHMU’s mission and broader University of Utah research enterprise.

The Director will lead, mentor, and manage C&R staff, collaborate on external funding efforts, and amplify NHMU’s scientific reputation

Qualifications

• Progressive responsibility in collections management and scientific research; includes leadership and supervision.
• Experience leading internal and external funding efforts (grants, contracts, philanthropy).
• Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide long-term, strategic leadership for the Department and excellence in research and collections stewardship.
• Develop and implement scientific priorities aligning with NHMU’s mission and strategic plan.
• Champion interdisciplinary, collaborative scientific practices across the Museum.
• Oversee fundraising and external partnerships to support research and collections.
• Represent the Department as a member of NHMU’s leadership team and collaborate on institution-wide planning.
