Job summary

Montclair State University Libraries in Montclair, NJ seeks a Head for Research and Teaching Services, a 12-month tenure-track role with the concurrent academic rank of Associate Professor. The position leads a team of librarians, oversees information literacy, and drives teaching, workshops and outreach for the university community.

The role reports to Library leadership, collaborates with the Bloomfield Campus Library, and serves on the Library Administrative Team.

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited library school.
• Minimum of five years of professional library experience with responsibility in public services including reference, teaching and outreach.
• Strong record of effective teaching and instructional design.
• Experience in an academic or research library.
• Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, critical pedagogy, and/or current information literacy teaching principles and practices.
• Demonstrated leadership supporting employee professional development.
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills with the ability to foster positive working relationships and build partnerships.
• Experience leading collegial and productive teams.
• A record of professional service and scholarly activity.
• Strong cultural awareness and demonstrated commitment to supporting learning for all students.

Responsibilities

• Coordinates department faculty and staff, including a team of tenured and tenure-track librarians.
• Supervises department staff, adjuncts, and student workers; oversees information literacy and instruction, research and reference services, and scheduling classes and workshops.
• Leads assessment for areas of oversight and prepares reports for library leadership and stakeholders.
• Coordinates onboarding and mentoring for new department faculty and staff; hires and coordinates the work of temporary and adjunct librarians.
• Facilitates training for new librarians during their first semester with ongoing support through the tenure-track period.
• Schedules and conducts regular meetings of the department.
• Advises on departmental, library, and campus projects; promotes interdepartmental participation.
• Works with Bloomfield Campus Library on intercampus initiatives.
• Represent Research and Teaching Services on the Library Administrative Team and liaise with Library leadership.
