Job summary

The UW School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a seasoned Director of Research to provide executive oversight of the Department of Medicine’s research portfolio and align initiatives with institutional priorities. You will translate strategic goals into programs, policies, and operational improvements, partnering with leadership and external stakeholders.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer with a dotted-line to the Vice Dean for Research, you will supervise research administration

Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience managing complex, multidisciplinary research portfolios.
• At least 5 years direct pre- and post-award research administration oversight, proposal development, and budget planning.
• Experience administering large center/program grants and training.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provide executive leadership and strategic oversight of the department’s research portfolio.
• Develop and direct research program policies, procedures, and operating strategies.
• Lead long-term planning initiatives and align programs with priorities.
• Serve as liaison and spokesperson for internal and external stakeholders.
• Oversee budgets, allocate resources, and pursue research funding opportunities.
• Supervise research administration staff and foster professional development.
• Build cross‑unit relationships within a matrixed organization.
• Support faculty in developing and advancing research programs.
