Job description

Director of Research, Emergency Medicine (Finance)

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of South Florida, Morsani College of Medicine, provides clinical care at Tampa General Hospital across three sites, including a Level 1 trauma center and two emergency departments, with over 120,000 patient encounters annually and more than 40 faculty members. The department's outpatient services are expanding in areas such as addiction, medical toxicology, and primary care sports medicine. The USF EM residency program, established in 2003, trains 10 residents annually with a 96% board pass rate, and the department is deeply involved in undergraduate medical education. It also boasts a robust research program and offers fellowships in EMS, simulation, ultrasound, and HALM, with faculty leadership roles in various emergency services and organizations.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in clinical research administration within an academic medical or healthcare setting, demonstrating strong leadership skills, the ability to develop research infrastructure, and in-depth knowledge of regulatory compliance, contract negotiations, and clinical trial management. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are essential for engaging with stakeholders and advancing the department's research mission.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Certification in Clinical Research from a reputable society
  • Experience in large or complex health organizations
  • Leadership experience in clinical operations within pharma or CROs
  • Experience establishing external partnerships between pharma, CROs, and academic health centers
  • 3-5 years of management/leadership experience in clinical research
  • 3-5 years supervisory experience
  • Florida Nursing License

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage clinical, scientific, operational compliance, and regulatory aspects of research related to the Department of Emergency Medicine and TGH Emergency Department Clinical Research, ensuring adherence to all relevant regulations and standards.
  2. Supervise, develop, and coordinate research staff, overseeing daily operations, staffing, and study start-ups, including collaboration with clinical nurses and investigators.
  3. Track and report on research financials and activities, develop dashboards and summaries for leadership, and serve as the central contact for clinical trial operations.
  4. Lead special projects and initiatives, oversee research activities from screening to data collection, and ensure compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.
