Job Description

The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice seeks an exceptional leader for the role of Director of Practice Operations and Administration. This strategic position requires a thinker who understands how operations and finances support the broader organizational mission. The Director will oversee daily operations within the Civil Practice, collaborating with central administrative teams (HR, Facilities, IT, Finance) and working directly with the Borough Administrators to meet Practice needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership and Management
  • Set high standards and success metrics for the team, including Deputy Directors and Practice Coordinators.
  • Provide oversight to Borough Administrators and develop practice-wide standards.
  • Manage cross-departmental collaboration, strengthen internal communication, and delegate authority for operations management.
  • Report directly to the Chief Attorney and participate as a key leadership team member.
  • Partner with Directors of Practice Operations in Criminal and Juvenile Rights Practices.
Practice Management
  • Coordinate with HR on recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, performance management, and compliance.
  • Manage labor-related issues, including collective bargaining, grievances, and labor policy implementation.
  • Collaborate with IT and Facilities to resolve operational issues.
  • Oversee the Practice budget, including purchasing and expenses, and work with Grants & Contracts teams on compliance.
Team Development and Supervision
  • Assign work, approve leave, and supervise staff performance and development.
  • Identify training needs and ensure mandatory trainings are completed.
  • Define roles, responsibilities, and accountability practices.
Professional Development and Other Duties
  • Engage in ongoing professional growth and promote an inclusive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree and at least 6 years of relevant experience, or a total of 10+ years of education and/or work experience. Experience in program management or operations, team management, and strategic planning.

Preferred: Master's degree in public administration, business, or related fields; at least 2 years of management experience.

  • Effective with unionized workforces and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Advanced computer skills preferred.

Physical and Travel Requirements
  • Primarily sedentary work with significant computer use; travel within NYC required.
Salary and Benefits

Range: $151,000 – $161,000. Benefits include health insurance, paid leave, disability, life insurance, and more. Details available online.
