Job description

Job Title: Director of Practice Operations and Administration

The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice seeks an exceptional leader to join as the Director of Practice Operations and Administration. This strategic role requires a thinker who understands how operations and finances support the organization's mission.

The Director will oversee daily Operations and Administration within the Civil Practice, partnering with central administrative teams (HR, Facilities, IT, Finance) and working directly with Civil Practice Borough Administrators to meet all Practice needs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership and Management
  • Implement high standards and success metrics for the team, including Deputy Directors and Practice Coordinators.
  • Provide oversight to Borough Administrators and develop practice-wide standards.
  • Manage cross-departmental collaboration and internal communications.
  • Report to the Chief Attorney of the Civil Practice and serve as a key leadership team member.
  • Partner with Directors in Criminal and Juvenile Rights Practices.
Practice Management
  • Work with Human Resources on recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, and compliance.
  • Manage labor-related issues, grievances, and operational improvements.
  • Oversee practice budget related to purchasing and expenses.
Team Development and Supervision
  • Assign work, approve time off, and supervise staff performance.
  • Provide training, development, and performance feedback.
Professional Development and Other Duties
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and promote inclusivity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required: Bachelor's degree with 6+ years relevant experience or equivalent education and experience; experience in program management or operations; leadership in managing teams and projects.

Preferred: Master's degree in public administration, business, or related field; 2+ years management experience.

  • Ability to work with unionized staff, communicate effectively, and build relationships.
  • Strong analytical, negotiating, and decision-making skills.
Physical & Work Environment
  • Mostly sedentary, computer-based work with travel within NYC.
Salary & Benefits

Salary range: $151,000 - $161,000. Benefits include health insurance, paid leave, disability, life insurance, and loan forgiveness programs.
