Position Summary: The core faculty member for our Family Medicine Residency program will play a key role in educating and training future family medicine physicians. The Director of Osteopathic Education has additional responsibilities to ensure that all residents that desire and qualify for participation on the Osteopathic Recognition Track have an appropriate educational experience. The successful candidate will have the requisite osteopathic expertise and possess strong clinical and teaching skills, and will work collaboratively with the program director, residents, and other faculty members to provide a comprehensive educational experience for our residents. This position reports to the Program Director.

Essential Duties:

PATIENT CARE

  1. Provide evidence based, cost-effective, high-quality care for patients
  2. Participate in and lead quality improvement activities that include an emphasis on reducing health disparities
  3. Keep up all licenses and board certifications as required
  4. Complete all clinical charting in a timely fashion
  5. Coordinate and lead interprofessional, team-based care with respect and compassion
  6. Actively work toward improving the health of the community through understanding local needs and disparities

EDUCATIONAL THEORY AND PRACTICE

  1. Development and implementation of Osteopathic Practices and Principles curriculum
  2. Teach and train resident physicians, medical students, and other learners (when applicable) in the theory, science, and identity of Family Medicine within systems of health care
  3. Engage in and role-model lifelong learning practices and intellectual curiosity
  4. Epitomize professionalism in teaching, clinical care, leadership, and advocacy
  5. Provide didactic lectures for the residency program as directed by the Program Director or designee that include relevant information on health disparities
  6. Serve as a mentor and advisor for the residents
  7. Participate and lead in scholarly activity driven by interest and as directed by the program director
  8. Deliver and provide an engaging learning curriculum and environment
  9. Develop, utilize and contribute to competency-based curriculum that incorporates learning objectives specific to DEI
  10. Actively participate in and facilitate faculty development activities
  11. Evaluate Family Medicine residents and medical students (when relevant) in a timely manner using competency based/milestone evaluations and via direct observation and other relevant evaluation methods. Special attention will be made to evaluate Osteopathic Principles and Practice
  12. Coordinate and update relevant didactics sessions as well as assigned rotation or longitudinal curriculum
  13. Supervise Family Medicine Residents QA/QI and research activities as required/appropriate
  14. Engage in Osteopathic professional development
  15. Attends didactics when not scheduled for patient care or covering the inpatient service
  16. Provides at least 4 didactic sessions annually
  17. Seek feedback on own performance and work to use feedback to improve performance
  18. Provide feedback in a respectful and behavior focused manner
  19. Work with the faculty team to develop, implement, and evaluate performance improvement and remediation plans for learners

ADMINISTRATIVE

  1. Administer and maintain an environment conducive to osteopathic education
  2. Review and approve faculty and residents to participate on the Osteopathic Recognition Track
  3. Serve on committees at the hospital or clinic to enhance medical education, patient care, or quality improvement at those facilities
  4. Maintain accountability for monitoring resident work hours, paying close attention to signs of Fatigue and Sleep Deprivation in individuals
  5. Actively participate in faculty meetings, CCC meetings, PEC meetings, as well as any GMEC meetings as directed by the program director
  6. Participate in program evaluation and developing plans for improvement as well as actively engage in implementing relevant action items to ensure programmatic success

Work to recognize and mitigate bias

Education and Experience:

  1. DO or MD degree from an accredited medical school
  2. Board certification in Family Medicine
  3. Certification through the AOA or qualifications judged acceptable by the ACGME Osteopathic Recognition Committee
  4. Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in Maine
  5. Two years of experience as a practicing family physician, with prior teaching experience preferred
  6. Strong clinical skills in family medicine, including outpatient and inpatient care
  7. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  8. Commitment to the education and development of future family medicine physicians
  9. Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of stakeholders, including residents, faculty members, staff, and patients
  10. Experience with electronic medical record systems and other clinical technologies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards
