Harlem is the largest hospital in the area, capable of treating the most seriously ill. Harlem provides over 90 specialized ambulatory care services, dentistry and oral surgery, behavioral health services, and community substance abuse treatment.

Job Description

The Director of Nursing is an integral member of the Nursing and Patient Care Services Administration. They work under the supervision of the Chief Nursing Officer or a designee, assuming administrative responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services. The role involves developing systems and processes for clinical care delivery, managing departmental activities, including clinical quality improvement, and establishing metrics to meet regulatory and organizational goals. The Director is responsible for creating strategies, structures, and standardization of leading practice services to achieve clinical and operational excellence, support financial sustainability, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration within the framework of hospital policies, regulations, and standards.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all patient care and operational activities, with twenty-four (24) hour responsibility for patient care areas.
  • Promote a positive workplace attitude that fosters customer service and aligns with the hospital’s Mission, Vision, and Values.
  • Manage patient care and unit operations.
  • Collaborate with other Directors of Nursing to improve patient care and employee performance.
  • Monitor employee performance related to patient care and nursing practices, ensuring compliance with policies and documentation standards.
  • Communicate patient care and service issues promptly and assist in corrective actions.
  • Conduct frequent rounds with/without Nurse Managers to assess units.
  • Evaluate staffing plans to ensure adequacy for patient care needs.
  • Work with peers and Assistant Directors of Nursing to develop mechanisms for continuous feedback on patient care and nursing practices, ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
