Director of Nursing (DON)

Overview

NaphCare is hiring an experienced Director of Nursing (DON) to join our team of medical professionals at the Mesa County Jail in Grand Junction, Colorado. Pay rates range from $45.90-$48.45 per hour, based on employment status, site needs, licensure, and experience.

The Director of Nursing plays a key role in fostering a positive work environment for nurses and support staff. You will lead by example, set clear expectations, communicate practice changes, advocate for nursing needs, and collaborate with staff, including recruiting, coaching, and mentoring new nurses. All work is performed in compliance with standards and regulations.

Responsibilities
  1. Manage all aspects of nursing staff to ensure quality care that respects patients' rights, dignity, and health.
  2. Collaborate with medical, mental health, and correctional staff to improve patient care and maintain a safe environment.
  3. Lead Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  4. Oversee nursing operations, resources, budgets, staffing, hiring, training, and performance evaluations.
  5. Ensure adherence to policies, procedures, and the company Code of Conduct.
  6. Coordinate patient care with external healthcare providers.
  7. Monitor compliance with policies, ACA, NCCHC standards, and take corrective actions as needed.
  8. Ensure availability of healthcare equipment, supplies, and medications.
  9. Support staff development in problem-solving and nursing diagnoses.
  10. Conduct daily clinical rounds, review documentation, and ensure staff understanding and adherence.
  11. Provide educational classes, in-service training, and update staff on new procedures.
  12. Address safety hazards and report issues to leadership.
  13. Participate in required meetings for contract compliance.
Qualifications

Education, Licenses, & Certifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Colorado.
  • Active CPR certification.

Experience, Skills, & Requirements:

  • At least three years of clinical and management experience in correctional or acute healthcare settings.
  • Ability to manage staffing and supplies effectively.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and coaching skills.
  • Knowledge of nursing practices, safety standards, and healthcare regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to a Code of Conduct.
  • Must pass criminal background check and drug screening.

Physical Capabilities:

Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform physically demanding tasks including CPR.
