Job Opening: Director of Middle School Academics
Job Description: CitySquash is seeking a full-time Director of Middle School Academics to start in Summer 2025. The Academic Director oversees the academic progress of CitySquash’s ~60 middle school students, working closely with the students, their parents, and teachers. The Director of Middle School Academics will report directly to the Program Director.
Program Description: CitySquash (www.citysquash.org) is a nonprofit youth program based in the Bronx. The organization helps motivated and talented young people from economically disadvantaged households to fulfill their academic, athletic and personal potential. Founded in 2002, CitySquash currently serves 200 elementary, middle, Middle School, and college students. For our participants, CitySquash is an intensive, multi day-a-week commitment that lasts up to 14 years and includes squash, tutoring, mentoring, community service, travel, culture, nutrition, Middle School placement, employment training and college prep. Over 130 CitySquash students have won scholarships to selective prep schools and colleges, including Avon Old Farms, Berkshire, Blair, Brooks, Canterbury, Eaglebrook, Episcopal, Hackley, Lawrenceville, Loomis Chaffee, Mercersburg, Millbrook, St. George’s, St. Paul's, Taft, Trinity-Pawling, Westover, Bates, Bowdoin, Columbia, Connecticut College, Cornell, CUNY, Franklin & Marshall, Hamilton, Hobart, Middlebury, Mt. Holyoke, St. Lawrence, Trinity, Vassar and Wesleyan.
CitySquash looks forward to the opening of its brand new 15,000 ft2 academic & squash facility, the Julian H. Robertson Jr. CitySquash Center, in June 2025 in the Bronx.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities:
· Develop, schedule, and supervise all aspects of the Middle School Academic Program, including the Middle School Summer Camp
· Implement and design curricula, and teach daily academic sessions
· Establish and maintain partnerships with school partners (teachers, counselors, administrators), communicating regularly with them on ways for students to improve their school performance through supplementary enrichment like tutoring, specialized homework help, sessions and individual improvement plans
· Meet with students and families regularly for feedback on school and CitySquash performance
· Assist in supervising and putting together tutoring materials for volunteer tutors for middle school students
· Collect, record, and monitor changes in student data, including attendance, school grades, academic assessments, etc.
· Research opportunities for and lead community service and cultural enrichment outings for students
· Assist in the planning and facilitation of annual program events (e.g. graduations, and program-wide gatherings)
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s Degree required
· Experience teaching and/or working with children, especially at-risk youth, for at least one year after college is highly preferable
· Knowledge of Spanish (with proficiency or fluency highly preferred)
· Excellent written and oral communication skills
· Driver's license required (candidates must be comfortable driving a 15-passenger van)
· Must be energetic, upbeat, and enthusiastic about CitySquash mission
Schedule:
During the school year (September-June), CitySquash academic programming typically ends around 7:00pm Monday through Friday. Academic Directors are also expected to work up to 12 weekend days during the school year (for community service and culture projects, and overnight team trips). During the summer (July and August), CitySquash programming ends by 5:00pm. There is no weekend work when school is not in session in July and August.
Vacation: The position includes 30 days of paid company holidays (some but not all national holidays are off).
Compensation: $50,000-$60,000 DOE. Full health insurance coverage.
