Job summary

The Director of Labs for Education at New Jersey Institute of Technology leads the operation, safety, and instructional readiness of the undergraduate teaching laboratories in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

You will instruct faculty, staff, and students in operating laboratory equipment, calibrate instruments, and develop training sessions, including civil and environmental engineering software applications.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related area, with 5–10 years of experience in experimental design and execution.
• Ability to understand experimental requirements and to make recommendations on goal attainment.
• Computer literacy in major civil and environmental engineering software, along with a thorough understanding of data acquisition and the experimental interface.
• Experience setting up, calibrating, and maintaining analytical laboratory instrumentation is preferred.

Responsibilities

• The position develops procedures, training materials, and software-based instructional sessions for civil and environmental engineering laboratory courses; monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures; teaches selected laboratory sections such as Strength of Materials, Hydraulics, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials, Soil/Water/Air Quality, Environmental Systems, and Microbiology for Environmental Engineers.

Position Summary

Promotes the educational laboratories in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including the laboratories supporting the undergraduate Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering programs. Instructs faculty, staff, and students in the operation of laboratory equipment used for education. Sets up laboratory spaces and experiments, and calibrates and maintains the analytical equipment used in civil and environmental engineering instruction. Monitors safety in the laboratories. Develops and conducts training sessions, including civil and environmental engineering software applications, for educational programs.

Essential Functions

• The Director of Labs for Education is responsible for the operation, safety, and instructional readiness of the Department's undergraduate teaching laboratories.
• This includes installing, calibrating, and maintaining analytical and environmental monitoring equipment; setting up laboratory spaces and experiments in coordination with faculty; and instructing faculty, staff, and students in the proper and safe use of laboratory equipment.
• The position develops procedures, training materials, and software-based instructional sessions for civil and environmental engineering laboratory courses; monitors and enforces laboratory safety procedures, including potential service on the university and/or college Safety Committee; and teaches selected laboratory sections such as Strength of Materials, Hydraulics, Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials, Soil/Water/Air Quality, Environmental Systems, and Microbiology for Environmental Engineers.
• Assists student chapters in the development and execution of competitions and other educational projects.
• Develops proposals to use the Civil and Environmental Engineering laboratories and equipment for educational purposes.
• Installs and calibrates new laboratory equipment, including analytical instrumentation used in civil and environmental engineering laboratories.
• Assists faculty with the design, set-up and execution of laboratory experiments.
• Develops procedures and instructions for proper use of laboratory equipment.
• Maintains laboratory equipment, including analytical and environmental monitoring instrumentation, and contacts vendors when repairs are necessary.
• Recommends to the Department Chair new equipment and upgrades of present equipment.
• Monitors safety procedures in the laboratories, including safety procedures for experiments in process, may be requested to sit on the university and/or college Safety Committee.
• Develops student training sessions for civil and environmental engineering software applications.
• Assists in open houses and outreach events.
• Additional functions include recommending equipment purchases and upgrades to the Department Chair, coordinating vendor repairs, supporting student chapters and outreach events, overseeing student laboratory workers, collaborating with the CEE Director of Labs for Research, and maintaining a flexible schedule to accommodate departmental programs and activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the chair.
