Director of Inventory and Supply Planning

Yakima, WA, US

Salary Range: $109,600.00 To $164,400.00 Annually

Position summary

The Director of Inventory and Supply Planning leads the company's hop and hop-product inventory function, with accountability for inventory availability, allocation, utilization, and compliance with customer and export requirements. This position directs inventory planning and position management across locations and product lines, leads cross-functional efforts to align inventory, demand, and production capabilities, and works closely with Sales, Manufacturing, Quality, Logistics, and Finance to support customer service and profitability. The Director establishes inventory priorities, resolves complex inventory challenges, and leads the inventory management team while partnering with the VP of Supply Chain to execute approved supply chain strategies and initiatives.

Primary responsibilities:

50% 1. Inventory and position management:Leads the company's inventory and position management function, with accountability for inventory availability, allocation, utilization, and associated operational and financial outcomes. Establishes inventory planning and allocation priorities, directs the resolution of complex inventory challenges, and makes significant inventory decisions within the commercial and purchasing strategy approved by the VP of Supply Chain.

Allocation and availability

  • Establish allocation priorities, oversee lot-level allocation decisions, and resolve significant allocation conflicts or exceptions. Own the product-availability process with Sales and Sales Administration: availability for offers, finished-pellet availability for shipment, long and short positions, and high-risk bookings. Escalate material position or service risks to the VP of Supply Chain with a recommended course of action.
  • Lead the resolution of complex inventory allocation and availability challenges involving competing quality, regulatory, production, financial, and customer requirements. Evaluate tradeoffs, establish priorities, and make decisions that balance customer commitments, inventory utilization, compliance, and business performance.

Position, cost, and purchasing input

  • Direct domestic and foreign hop-position management, including purchase-order oversight for raw hops, pellets, and other hop products, delivery timing with Logistics and external partners, and review of foreign hop invoices and related freight, duty, and currency input to Accounting.
  • Provide inventory, pricing, and availability input to domestic and import purchasing timing and to trading tactics. Recommend, rather than unilaterally set, purchasing and trading strategy; the VP of Supply Chain retains approval of strategy and material commitments.
  • Oversee maintenance of the sales price list and related gross-margin variables, coordinating approved changes with Sales and Marketing and the VP of Supply Chain. Oversee supply and demand planning for current and new products, including Advanced Products for brewing and non-brewing uses, and keep a current view of quality, yield, and inventory still to be processed.

Compliance and records

  • Oversee pesticide-application records, export MRL requirements by country and customer, and pesticide traceability responses. Accountable for the inventory function’s compliance with those requirements and for timely escalation of regulatory change.
  • Ensure inventory records in the ERP and position-management systems are accurate, that discrepancies are resolved, and that leadership receives a current inventory and position view.

20% 2. Sales and operations planning alignment :Provides cross-functional leadership in aligning inventory position, customer demand, supply availability, and production capabilities through the company's sales and operations planning process. Identifies and drives resolution of significant planning gaps and competing priorities to support operational performance, customer commitments, and financial objectives.

  • Lead cross-functional inventory and supply planning discussions with Sales, Marketing, Finance, Manufacturing, and Innovations. Establish priorities, facilitate decisions involving competing departmental needs, and drive accountability for addressing significant forecast, inventory, and supply risks.
  • Work with Sales and Marketing on demand projections from historical shipments, market trends, and customer input. Track forecast variance and the inventory consequence of that variance.
  • Work with the Manufacturing Scheduler and plant leadership on the annual master plan and on pellet and Advanced Products / extract schedules for brewing and non-brewing demand, covering both make-to-order and stock. Attend or designate attendance at plant scheduling meetings and give inventory feedback.
  • Monitor safety stock, capacity, supplier performance, and quality risk, and recommend corrective action before a constraint becomes a service or cost failure.
  • With Finance, connect the inventory and supply plan to budget and margin assumptions. Flag where the plan and the financial view diverge.
  • Maintain the position-management system with IT, including diagnostics, and sponsor practical improvements to forecasting and inventory tools. Tool development is a means to position accuracy, not a separate program.

15% 3. Team, systems, and harvest selections:Provides leadership and direction for the inventory management function, establishing departmental priorities, performance expectations, and operating standards. Develops the Inventory Manager and team, drives continuous improvement, and ensures effective coordination with Sales, Quality, Logistics, Manufacturing, and other business functions.

  • Lead the Inventory Manager and, through that role, the Supply Chain Coordinator and Assistant Supply Chain Specialist. Set expectations, ensure training, and complete annual, mid-year, and goal reviews.
  • Establish and monitor key inventory performance measures, identify opportunities to improve inventory utilization, accuracy, and availability, and lead initiatives to improve overall inventory management effectiveness.
  • Hold the team to allocation, availability, traceability, and price-list standards. Step in on exceptions and on coverage when the Inventory Manager is absent; do not routinely perform coordinator-level transactions.
  • Oversee ERP setups that determine inventory behavior — items, formulas and recipes, locations, warehouses, alpha actualization, and related targets — and the procedures for troubleshooting them.
  • Direct the annual brewery hop-selection process: sampling objectives with the VP of Supply Chain and Sales and Marketing, the selection calendar, lot selection, lab requests, sample preparation, and paperwork. During September and October this work, with the team, is the dominant priority.

10% 4. Market reporting and external position:

  • Oversee the preparation and submission of required industry reports and the monitoring of current and projected U.S. hop acreage and production volumes, ensuring information is accurate and available to support inventory planning and business decisions.
  • Share acreage, position, and market data with BarthHaas Group counterparts and provide inventory and market input to the annual Barth Report.
  • Keep a working knowledge of domestic and global hop supply, pricing, and trading practice sufficient to brief the VP of Supply Chain and Sales leadership.

5% 5. Other duties as assigned.

Conditions of employment

  • Must comply with all John I. Haas, Inc. policies and procedures, including successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug test.
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, and move about the facility. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to drive to and from Haas facilities (Gordon Road plant and warehouse, Toppenish farms) on a regular basis.
  • Normal hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional hours, weekends, and customer or grower entertainment as needed. During harvest (September/October) the supply chain team, including this role, works seven days a week for roughly one month.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally a few times each year.
  • Must comply with the Integrated Management System and be trained on procedures applicable to the role, including significant quality, environmental, and food-safety aspects.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field, and progressive experience in inventory, materials, or supply planning, including accountability for a multi-location inventory or planning function OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which clearly demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the role
  • Experience directing inventory across locations and product lines, including allocation, supply and demand planning, cost or margin awareness, and management of long and short positions.
  • Experience making and defending decisions from incomplete or competing data, and a record of solving complex allocation, quality, or service problems rather than only administering a plan. Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to present a position recommendation and its cost and service consequences to senior leaders.
  • Experience leading and developing a team, including performance expectations and goal setting, and influencing peers in sales, operations, or finance who do not report to the role.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with advanced Excel, and working experience in an ERP or inventory system. Able to improve how the team uses those tools.
  • Able to work seven days a week for about one month to 6 weeks each year during harvest (September/October).

Preferred:

  • Experience in food, agriculture, ingredients, or another seasonal crop supply chain.
  • Exposure to hop, brewing, or export pesticide / MRL requirements.
  • Experience with ERP planning (MRP) and a position-management or demand-planning system; Microsoft Dynamics 365 is a plus.
  • Experience contributing to an S&OP or integrated business-planning cycle.
  • Financial acuity sufficient to connect inventory decisions to gross margin, carrying cost, and obsolete or distressed inventory.
  • Experience analyzing position data for trend and cause, and presenting the finding to commercial and operations audiences.
