Job summary

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is seeking an Imaging Sciences Fabrication and Design Core Director to lead a new fabrication/instrumentation core.

The role requires building a sustainable operational model, hiring 2–4 staff, and coordinating with design/construction, finance, and leadership to align with department and institutional needs. The director will drive teaching and training, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, manage budgets, and implement innovative core models.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant scientific discipline required.
• 10+ years of experience in relevant technical field.
• 8+ years of experience in relevant technical field with a Master’s degree.
• 5+ years of experience in relevant technical field with a PhD.
• Significant experience in a research functional area with leadership of mid-large teams preferred.
• Experience with machining, 3D printing preferred.
• Experience with imaging and/or microscopy technologies preferred.
• Experience leading large-scale projects through to implementation preferred.
• Experience with operational mgmt., budget planning, and stakeholder/resource management preferred.
• Prior experience building external connections with peers and expert networks preferred.

Responsibilities

• Plan, build and run a state-of-the-art fabrication and instrumentation core.
• Recruit, train and manage 2–4 staff to provide expertise.
• Oversee space renovations and ensure budget and schedule adherence.
• Scope major equipment purchases and coordinate installation and training.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of fabrication/instumentation techniques and share with the team.
• Provide daily oversight of core activities and manage budget and stakeholders.
• Collaborate with leadership and external partners to optimize efficiency and innovation.
• Lead hiring, goal setting, performance evaluation and staff development.
• Foster collaboration and continuous improvement across the department.
