The College of Arts & Sciences is looking for a versatile, experienced leader and strategic partner to direct and oversee the Office of Overseas Programs. The Director of Global Education advances the College’s mission to support undergraduate student engagement in meaningful intercultural and international academic experiences that enable the acquisition of broad cultural knowledge, languages, and skills to participate fully in a global society. The position of Director is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of Overseas Programs, activities, and personnel. Additionally, the Director works in close collaboration with the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and other school leaders in Arts & Sciences to develop and regularly update the strategic vision of the Office of Overseas Programs in the context of the global priorities of the university and Arts & Sciences; provides strategic and organizational guidance to operations and areas of growth; serves as the principal Arts & Sciences liaison and strategic partner for university-wide health, safety, and risk management efforts that govern international activity; and plays a critical role in the establishment and maintenance of relationships with partner institutions and study abroad program providers.

The Director of Global Education is a leadership role in the College of Arts & Sciences reporting to the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs. Eight FTE and two PTE staff members report through this position with four reporting directly to the Director of Global Education. In addition to collaborating closely with the office of the Dean of Arts & Sciences as well as departments and faculty within Arts & Sciences, the Director will engage in close communication and coordination with campus partners across Washington University, including the three other undergraduate schools, the Provost’s Office, General Counsel, university Risk Management, Emergency Management, and the Division of Student Affairs.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Lead the development and oversight of the Office of Overseas Programs activities and personnel.

  • Direct the development, planning, execution, and oversight of programs and events in all areas within Overseas Programs (including but not limited to: student advising and application process; programming prior to, during, and after students’ global learning experiences; support for course-based, faculty-led international travel; stakeholder communications; administration of the Terra Dotta student information system for the university; administration of processes for university and nationally-competitive study abroad scholarships; and administration of the incoming exchange student program in A&S).
  • Lead, mentor, and coach the assistant directors in their development as supervisors. Identify ongoing opportunities to develop specific management and leadership skills. Oversee, coordinate, support, and provide direction to the assistant directors in all cross-functional, collaborative, and collective work.
  • Supervise and support full-time site directors of university programs abroad under local contract, including secondary oversight of part-time staff.
  • Oversee, in consultation with the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and other A&S leadership as well as the Director of Finance and Operations, the financial administration of Overseas Programs, including program finances, contracts, and special requests.
  • Lead the assessment of programs within Overseas Programs. Work with assistant directors and team members to ensure program goals are effectively implemented and evaluated and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Serve as the chief program officer responsible for recruitment, hiring, supervision, professional development, and general management functions of all Overseas Programs personnel.
  • Formulate, implement, and perform ongoing review of study abroad policies, procedures, protocols, and organization, including evaluation for best practices, in consultation with the College of Arts & Sciences, the Study Abroad Advisory Board, and other A&S and WashU stakeholders.

Lead, in conjunction with the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and other A&S leaders, the development of the strategic direction of the Office of Overseas Programs in the context of the global priorities of the university and Arts & Sciences, institutional and student needs, and best practices in the field of international education.

  • Direct the planning and design of Overseas Program’s strategic vision as identified by the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and other A&S leadership.
  • Collaborate closely with the Vice Dean of Undergraduate Affairs and other A&S leadership in areas of strategic growth for undergraduate global learning opportunities, and contribute to special projects as needed, for example to conclude the 2025 study abroad portfolio review with the Vice Dean of Interdisciplinary Initiatives and Innovation.
  • Ensure the alignment of all programs, initiatives, and activities within Overseas Programs with strategic priorities within Arts & Sciences and the university at large, particularly as they relate to the liberal arts and sciences mission of the College.
  • Maintain relationships with Arts & Sciences academic departments to ensure curricular alignment of study abroad programs.
  • Research and recommend strategies to leverage and grow strengths of Overseas Programs, to address gaps in the mission and reach of Overseas Programs, and to utilize existing resources to support global learning for undergraduate students.
  • Represent Overseas Programs to the leadership of the College.

Formulate, implement, and oversee health, safety, and risk management plans for Overseas Programs and collaborate on university-wide plans with other Washington University units.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact in Arts & Sciences in cases of emergency involving students abroad.
  • Contribute to university-level discussion and formulation of policies and processes that govern international activity via the International Travel Oversight Committee and other committees as assigned by Washington University leadership.

Establish and maintain relationships with partner institutions and study abroad program providers.

  • Oversee evaluation of all programs for academic excellence, student support, and financial sustainability.

Salary Range

$75,200.00 - $128,800.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University.
