ABOUT THE ROLE
Pressed Cafe is seeking a strategic, hands-on Director of Facilities to build and lead the facilities function across our cafés in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Reporting to the SVP, Strategy & Operation Services, this leader owns the full facilities portfolio - maintenance strategy, capital planning, vendor partnerships, budget, compliance, and the team that delivers it - and makes sure every location is safe, efficient, and ready to scale with our growth.
This is a working director role - hands-on is part of the job. You'll set the strategy and build the systems, and you'll also be in our cafés every week troubleshooting equipment, making repairs yourself when it makes sense, and stepping in to cover service calls while we build out the facilities team. If a walk-in is down at 6 a.m., you're comfortable diagnosing it before deciding whether a vendor needs to come out. The best facilities leaders we know can walk the executive team through a capital plan in the morning and have their hands in a compressor that afternoon.
The ideal candidate has scaled facilities in a multi-unit restaurant or retail environment, builds strong teams and vendor networks, and thinks in terms of asset lifecycle, total cost of ownership, and guest impact. You'll partner closely with Operations, Construction & Development, and Finance to protect today's cafés and set up every new opening for long-term success.
- You own the facilities strategy, budget, and outcomes for every café — not just the work order queue.
- You build and lead the team: hiring, developing, and managing facilities staff and the vendor network behind them.
- You're accountable for the numbers - R&M spend, capital plans, response times, and equipment uptime - and report them to senior leadership.
- You stay hands-on: troubleshooting, diagnosing, and handling repairs directly when needed, especially while the team is still being built.
- You spend most of your week in our cafés, not behind a desk. Being on site keeps your strategy grounded in what is really happening in our buildings.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
STRATEGY & LEADERSHIP
- Build and lead Pressed Cafe's facilities function, setting the vision, standards, and operating model for a growing multi-unit portfolio.
- Recruit, develop, and manage facilities team members (technicians, coordinators) as the function grows; set clear goals and hold the team accountable to service levels.
- Serve as the senior facilities voice to the leadership team, presenting priorities, risks, and investment recommendations.
- Develop scalable facilities policies, SOPs, and standards that keep pace with new café openings.
- Own the annual facilities operating budget (R&M, service contracts, utilities) and multi-year capital plan, partnering with Finance on forecasting and variance.
- Build an asset lifecycle and equipment replacement strategy for HVAC, refrigeration, and foodservice equipment, making repair-vs-replace decisions based on total cost of ownership.
- Lead remodel, refresh, and capital improvement projects from scope through closeout.
- Drive cost savings through energy management, contract consolidation, and stronger preventative programs.
MAINTENANCE & VENDOR PROGRAMS
- Design and own the preventative maintenance program across all locations, reducing reactive repairs and equipment downtime.
- Build and manage the vendor network: source, negotiate, and contract master service agreements; set SLAs and run regular performance reviews.
- Own the work order system (ServiceChannel or similar), including workflows, approval thresholds, invoice controls, and reporting.
PERFORMANCE, COMPLIANCE & RISK
- Establish facilities KPIs (response and resolution times, R&M spend per café, PM completion, equipment uptime) and report on them regularly.
- Ensure all locations meet health, safety, fire, ADA, and building code requirements; maintain permits, licenses, and compliance documentation.
- Lead emergency preparedness and business continuity planning, and serve as the escalation point for major facilities incidents, including after hours.
- Partner with Finance and leadership on insurance claims and facilities-related risk mitigation.
- Spend the majority of your week on site across our cafés, auditing conditions, verifying vendor work, and coaching café leaders on facilities standards.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment and building issues firsthand, and perform hands‑on repairs and maintenance when needed (HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, and foodservice equipment).
- Step in to cover technician work and urgent service calls when needed, including during gaps in team coverage.
- Respond in person to urgent maintenance issues and emergencies, including after hours.
- Build strong partnerships with General Managers and Operations leaders so facilities priorities reflect what teams experience day to day.
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
- Partner with the Director of Construction & Development on new café openings, remodels, and expansion — owning design input for maintainability, equipment specifications, and the handoff from construction to operations.
- Lead facilities readiness for every new opening: warranties, vendor onboarding, PM schedules, and as‑built documentation.
- Support additional projects and initiatives as assigned.
WHAT YOU BRING
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- 8+ years of facilities management experience, including 3+ years in a leadership role managing teams and vendor networks.
- Experience overseeing facilities for a multi‑unit restaurant, retail, or hospitality portfolio (10+ locations preferred).
- Proven ownership of facilities operating and capital budgets, with the ability to build a business case and present it to senior leadership.
- Deep working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, and commercial foodservice equipment.
- Track record of building or scaling preventative maintenance programs, vendor programs, and facilities processes in a growth environment.
- Experience negotiating master service agreements and managing vendor performance against SLAs.
- Strong command of work order / CMMS platforms (ServiceChannel or similar) and data‑driven reporting.
- Working knowledge of building codes, permitting, OSHA, ADA, and health department requirements.
- Hands‑on troubleshooting and repair skills, with comfort diagnosing equipment issues and doing the work yourself when needed.
- Ability to read plans, technical drawings, and construction documents.
- Strong communication and leadership skills with a service‑first mindset.
NICE TO HAVE
- Bachelor's degree in facilities management, engineering, construction management, or a related field.
- Facilities certifications (IFMA CFM, FMP, or similar).
- Experience supporting new unit openings for a high‑growth restaurant brand.
- Experience leading energy management or sustainability initiatives.
FIELD, TRAVEL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to travel regularly between café locations across Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
- Flexibility to support evenings, weekends, and emergency escalations as needed.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, kneel, crawl, and work in active café and construction environments.
