Director of Engineering, Payments

provides strategic leadership for the engineering organization building Entrata’s core payments platform and money-movement infrastructure across card, ACH, disbursement, ledger, and settlement workflows.

Serving as the technical authority for our regulated financial architecture, this leader brings direct experience operating within FinCEN Money Services Business (MSB) federal registration frameworks and maintaining state-level Money Transmitter License (MTL) compliance for holding and moving customer funds.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, direct, and scale software engineering teams building and operating Entrata’s core payment processing platforms, money movement infrastructure, and financial tech stack.
  • Partner closely with Legal, Compliance, Security, and Product leadership to architect and maintain systems that strictly align with FinCEN Money Services Business (MSB) regulations and state-level Money Transmitter License (MTL) requirements.
  • Oversee the technical roadmap for payment gateways, fund holding/escrow architectures, double-entry ledgering, ACH, card processing, and real-time settlement platforms designed to securely move customer funds.
  • Ensure engineering platforms adhere to federal/state audit standards, automated AML/KYC workflows, transaction monitoring, PCI-DSS compliance, and reporting controls required for holding and transferring funds.
  • Maintain high standards for platform availability, latency, scalability, fault tolerance, and security across all money movement services.
  • Coach and develop engineering managers, staff engineers, and software teams, driving an engineering culture of technical rigor, accountability, and innovation.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with 5+ years in engineering leadership roles managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams in payments or FinTech.
  • Direct experience supporting or building systems for a FinCEN-registered Money Services Business (MSB) federal regulatory framework.
  • Hands-on experience developing and maintaining payment infrastructure subject to state-level Money Transmitter Licenses (MTL), specifically for businesses that hold and move customer funds.
  • Deep technical expertise in core payment architecture, card networks, ACH pipelines, ledger systems, reconciliation engines, and fund settlement workflows.
  • Strong knowledge of security, risk mitigation, and compliance frameworks governing financial applications (PCI-DSS Level 1, SOC 2, FinCEN rules, state banking department requirements).
  • Proven track record leading high-availability, mission-critical systems handling large-scale financial transaction volumes.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills, with demonstrated experience collaborating directly with Legal, Compliance, and Risk teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building automated compliance reporting tools for state-by-state MTL maintenance, exam readiness, and regulatory audits.
  • Advanced degree (BS/MS) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in SaaS payment systems, PropTech, or complex multi-party B2B2C payment ecosystems.
  • Background in cloud-native platforms (AWS) and modernizing legacy payment services into scalable microservices architectures.
AI & Operational Fluency
  • AI Integration: Proactively leverages company-approved GenAI tools to automate routine tasks and accelerate high-value deliverables.
  • Strategic Oversight: Functions as the "Human-in-the-Loop", taking full accountability for auditing AI outputs for factual accuracy, brand alignment, and the removal of hallucinations.
  • Data Governance: Adheres strictly to AI security protocols, ensuring no proprietary or Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data is exposed to unauthorized models.
