Director of Power Engineering – Hyperscale & Energy Infrastructure
Location: United States
Sector: Power Engineering | High Voltage | Power Generation | Data Centers
About the Opportunity
Haydon Healy is supporting an institutionally backed infrastructure developer specializing in hyperscale data center development and integrated power solutions across the United States.
The business is expanding its portfolio of grid-connected and behind-the-meter infrastructure projects, combining utility interconnections, high-voltage electrical infrastructure and on-site power generation to support growing energy demands from hyperscale customers.
We are seeking a Director of Power Engineering to lead technical engineering strategy, power infrastructure design and grid integration across a portfolio of large-scale developments.
This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an experienced power engineer who can operate strategically while remaining closely involved in engineering design, technical due diligence and project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering design and technical delivery of high-voltage substations, transmission infrastructure and associated electrical systems supporting hyperscale developments.
- Oversee power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit and stability assessments, to establish grid integration and system performance requirements.
- Develop and maintain technical standards for medium- and high-voltage electrical infrastructure, including substations, switchgear, protection systems and backup power.
- Define equipment specifications and engineering standards for on-site generation assets to support deployment across multiple development sites.
- Work directly with utilities, ISOs/RTOs and EPC contractors on interconnection engineering, infrastructure requirements and technical deliverables.
- Conduct technical due diligence on prospective development sites, assessing power availability, infrastructure constraints, upgrade requirements and engineering feasibility.
- Support the engineering and integration of behind-the-meter generation, including natural gas, diesel and dual-fuel technologies.
- Manage third-party engineering consultants, EPC contractors and technical vendors across concurrent infrastructure projects.
- Review engineering designs, drawings and specifications to ensure regulatory compliance, technical quality and project requirements are met.
- Support procurement and technical evaluation of major electrical and generation equipment.
- Represent the business in technical discussions and negotiations with utilities, regulators, hyperscale customers and delivery partners.
Candidate Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in electrical power engineering, with strong expertise in high-voltage substations, transmission systems or utility-scale electrical infrastructure.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
- Strong understanding of transmission and distribution interconnection processes, including 138 kV, 230 kV and 345 kV systems.
- Experience delivering engineering solutions for data centers, power generation facilities, utilities, industrial infrastructure or similarly complex projects.
- Proficiency with power system modeling and analysis software such as PSS/E, PSCAD, SKM PowerTools or equivalent platforms.
- Experience reviewing electrical engineering designs, major equipment specifications and grid integration studies.
- Familiarity with behind-the-meter generation and on-site gas, diesel or dual-fuel power systems is highly desirable.
- Proven experience coordinating with utilities, OEMs, EPC contractors and external engineering consultancies.
- Ability to lead technical workstreams across multiple simultaneous projects within a fast-growing development environment.
- Competitive cash compensation.
- Performance-based equity or profit participation.
- Significant technical ownership across major hyperscale and power infrastructure developments.
- Opportunity to influence engineering standards, power architecture and infrastructure delivery strategy across a growing national portfolio.
- Senior leadership position within an expanding, institutionally backed infrastructure development platform.
All applications and expressions of interest will be treated confidentially.
