Qualifications

• 10+ years in engineering or capital projects in refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, energy, manufacturing or similar industrial environments.
• 5+ years leading professional engineering, design, or other technical resources.
• Experience with complex capital projects involving multiple engineering disciplines.
• Experience managing scope, schedule, cost, quality, constructability, and commissioning requirements.
• Experience managing or overseeing engineering consultants, contractors, or other external resources.
• Experience presenting technical recommendations and project risks to leadership.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering activities for major capital projects from concept to closeout.
• Establish engineering standards for quality, design, documentation, constructability, reliability, and problem solving.
• Provide technical direction for major engineering decisions affecting projects and assets.
• Lead and develop engineering managers, supervisors, engineers, designers, and technical resources.
• Allocate internal, consultant, and contractor resources across the capital project portfolio.
• Partner with Project Management, Operations, Maintenance, Safety, Environmental, Procurement, Finance, and leadership to deliver safe, cost-effective engineering solutions.

Position Summary

Ergon's Energy & Specialty Solutions (ESS) division is seeking a Director of Engineering to provide strategic and functional leadership for engineering and major capital project execution.

This role leads engineering activities from early concept and scope development through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout. The Director will ensure engineering solutions balance safety, reliability, operability, constructability, cost, schedule, and long-term business value while developing organizational capability and delivering exceptional internal customer service.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering activities supporting major capital projects from concept and scope development through design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
• Establish engineering standards and expectations for technical quality, design practices, documentation, constructability, reliability, and disciplined problem solving.
• Provide technical direction and oversight for significant engineering decisions affecting capital projects and operating assets.
• Lead and develop engineering managers, supervisors, engineers, designers, and technical resources while strengthening accountability, capability, and succession depth.
• Establish engineering priorities and allocate internal, consultant, and contractor resources across the capital project portfolio based on business and project needs.
• Partner with Project Management, Operations, Maintenance, Safety, Environmental, Procurement, Finance, and business leadership to deliver safe, practical, and cost-effective engineering solutions.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, standards, tools, project delivery practices, lessons learned, and knowledge sharing.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
• 10+ years of progressively responsible engineering and/or capital project experience in refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, energy, manufacturing, or a comparable industrial environment.
• 5+ years of experience leading professional engineering, design, or other technical resources.
• Experience supporting or executing complex capital projects involving multiple engineering disciplines.
• Experience managing engineering scope, schedule, cost, quality, constructability, and commissioning requirements.
• Experience managing or providing technical oversight of engineering consultants, contractors, or other external technical resources.
• Experience presenting technical recommendations and project risks to business, operational, or project leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

• 15+ years of engineering and/or capital project experience in an industrial environment.
• 7+ years of experience leading multidisciplinary engineering or technical teams.
• Experience leading engineering for major capital projects through multiple phases of the project lifecycle, from development through commissioning.
• Experience managing multiple engineering disciplines and internal and external resources across a portfolio of capital projects.
• Experience establishing or improving engineering standards, design practices, technical governance, or project delivery processes.
• Experience evaluating equipment, technology, design alternatives, and lifecycle costs for significant capital investments.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license or advanced degree in Engineering.
