Job description

Description

IDX is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead our software engineering organization and help evolve how we build, deliver, and operate secure digital products.

This is a technical leadership role rather than a day-to-day coding position. The Director will be accountable for software architecture, engineering management, quality engineering, and test automation, while partnering closely with Product Management, Cloud Operations, Security, Compliance, IT, and other internal stakeholders. The role is well suited to an experienced engineering leader or a strong Senior Engineering Manager ready to step into broader organizational and technical responsibility.

This role reports to the Chief Technology Officer and will be a hybrid role with time spent in the IDX office in Beaverton, OR.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day leadership for the engineering organization, establishing clear priorities, ownership, and operating rhythms.

  • Coach and develop engineers through regular feedback, performance reviews, and career development.

  • Own software architecture and guide technical decisions across web and mobile applications, APIs, external integrations, microservices, and event-driven systems.

  • Partner with Product Management on delivery planning, roadmap execution, and transparent resolution of scope, schedule, quality, and technical tradeoffs.

  • Be accountable for quality engineering and test automation, including the evolution of practical, risk-based testing strategies.

  • Partner with Cloud Operations teams on cloud architecture, platform reliability, observability, DevOps, and CI/CD capabilities in AWS and Azure DevOps.

  • Partner with Security, Compliance, and IT to embed security, privacy, resilience, and compliance considerations throughout the software development lifecycle.

  • Help lead and strengthen the engineering practices that prevent incident occurrence and improve service reliability.

  • Advance the responsible use of AI and automation in daily engineering work, helping the team build confidence, establish sound practices, and identify appropriate AI-enabled product opportunities.

  • Improve delivery predictability, developer productivity, technical-debt management, and roadmap outcomes through meaningful metrics and continuous improvement.

  • Collaborate with third-party vendors and engineering partners to maintain clear technical expectations and effective delivery relationships.

  • Promote a culture of high standards, pragmatic problem-solving, sustainable delivery, coaching, delegation, and empowered decision-making.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Progressive software engineering leadership experience, including success managing and developing individual engineers.

  • Strong technical judgment and experience guiding architecture for cloud-based, production software systems.

  • Experience with modern web or mobile applications, APIs, third-party integrations, microservices, and event-driven architectures.

  • Working knowledge of AWS and contemporary software delivery practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and operational readiness.

  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Product Management and other stakeholders to turn priorities into realistic delivery plans and resolve tradeoffs constructively.

  • A record of improving engineering quality, delivery practices, technical health, and team effectiveness.

  • Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain technical decisions, risks, and options to technical and nontechnical audiences.

  • A coaching-oriented leadership style that creates accountability while enabling teams to make sound decisions with some autonomy.

  • Practical curiosity about AI-assisted engineering and the judgment to promote its responsible use without sacrificing security, quality, or maintainability.

Required Experience and/or Education

  • Leadership experience in a regulated business or other environment with significant security, privacy, or compliance obligations.

  • Familiarity with one or more of the following: HIPAA, SOC 2, PCI DSS, or FISMA.

  • Experience leading distributed or nearshore engineering teams.

  • Experience modernizing software architecture or reducing material technical debt.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
