Job summary

The University at Buffalo seeks a dynamic Director of Energy Management & Decarbonization to lead campus wide energy strategies, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and advance climate neutrality across operations.

The role partners with Facilities, Sustainability, and leadership to implement policies, manage energy projects, optimize building performance, and secure incentives while guiding a growing energy team toward measurable results.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering, energy, or related field.
• Proven history of energy management, utilities or decarbonization planning with measurable savings.
• Expertise with building systems (HVAC, BAS/BMS), energy metering/analytics, and M&V.
• Familiarity with energy modeling and tracking software and carbon accounting systems.
• Strong project management and vendor/contractor oversight skills.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills; valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Lead development and evaluation of campus-wide energy policies and guidelines.
• Collaborate on energy-focused capital and operational projects to improve efficiency and decarbonization.
• Oversee utility billing, cost allocations, budgeting, and procurement of energy resources.
• Manage campus energy metering, data collection, and analytics for energy performance.
• Oversee KPI development and reporting for energy and carbon metrics.
• Identify and manage energy incentives and grants with internal stakeholders.
• Advance building performance, commissioning, and decarbonization initiatives.
• Partner with Sustainability and Communications to report progress and raise awareness.
• Assess, build, and lead an energy management team with clear roles and leadership.
