Job summary

Penn State's Applied Research Laboratory in State College, PA, seeks a Department Head for the Embedded Software (ES) department. You will lead a team in developing, testing, and delivering software and firmware for undersea systems, coordinating with USO and office leadership.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or science; 19+ years of experience if applying as Principal Professional
• Experience leading engineering teams in R&D or product-focused environments
• Experience designing, developing, and delivering software/firmware for complex systems, including real-time embedded software

Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain a high-performing workforce through coaching, mentorship, succession planning, talent development, and employee engagement
• Establish the technical vision and strategic direction for the department, ensuring capabilities/resources align with objectives
• Direct and oversee the software engineering function in developing, releasing, and maintaining software/firmware for programs and customers
• Guide architecture, design, development, integration, and testing of embedded software and firmware for autonomous and undersea systems
• Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and best practices in software engineering
• Coordinate with office leadership to prioritize work and allocate resources
