Director of Discipleship / Pastor of Discipleship: Storefront Church

Job Description:

Pastor of Discipleship / Director of Discipleship has the responsibility of integrating spiritual formation in all its ministries with an emphasis on developing congregational movement toward the “callings” of a disciple (relationships, work and neighborhood). This role also has responsibility for pastoral oversight of Neighborhood Groups (small groups), as well as shared pastoral oversight of the Storefront congregation. Responsibilities include working with the Lead Pastor, Session, Neighborhood group leaders, staff and ministry team leaders on leader development, curriculum development and writing, and pastoral care issues, while maintaining visible presence at worship services and congregational events along with pastoral duties. This role is highly collaborative and team-oriented.

Position Qualifications:

THE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Spiritual Formation Strategy and Implementation (60%)

Lead the Storefront Congregation with Vision and Strategy for Discipleship (30%)

  • Activate church leadership to disciple-making (formation) as part of the strategy for fulfilling Storefront’s vision; update and solicit feedback regularly
  • Lead tactical and strategic planning to build out discipleship opportunities and groups
  • Advise and consult with staff and ministry team leaders in integrating discipleship with all ministries of Storefront
  • Work to integrate evangelism & missional living through the Neighbor Space.
  • Provide oversight of discipleship budget and ensure funds are used to achieve shared goals
  • Ensure quality control and brand standards of content
  • Develop expert knowledge in spiritual formation, callings, and adult learning
  • Create and edit discipleship content; delegate development of content to appropriate parties

Lead Storefront in Shared Discipleship Efforts (30%)

  • Mobilize Storefront Staff, Neighborhood Group (NG) Leaders and Staff & Ministry Team Leaders to promote adoption of and/or participation in discipleship offerings, including devotional, curriculum (e.g., NG guides), classes, conferences, and online learning
  • With Neighborhood Group Leaders, create feedback loops from congregants to church and discipleship teams to facilitate ongoing optimization of offerings
  • With Neighborhood Group Leaders, support and encourage lay-ministry initiatives to help build neighborhood, work, and relationships efforts
  • Ensure recruitment for church leadership/volunteer roles comes through discipleship pathways
  • Lead Storefront discipleship groups by spearheading recruitment efforts, providing pastoral care for Storefront participants, regularly teaching classes and retreat workshops.

Oversight of Groups and Leader Development (20%)

  • Oversee Neighborhood Groups, providing leadership development and pastoral care
  • Build a lay leader base of Christ-centered, outward-facing leader-coaches, group leaders and neighborhood leaders
  • Recruit leader-coaches and equip them in shepherding and developing the leaders and groups they oversee
  • Shepherd leaders and rising leaders in their spiritual formation and personal growth
  • Ensure that groups are visited at least once a year for care, assessment, and resourcing
  • Provide insight and expertise in development of content and execution of leader training meetings, including leader and member meetings, retreats/conferences and Sunday classes

Teaching, Worship Leading, Preaching (20%)

  • Lead worship on a regular basis
  • Perform pastoral and elder duties (baptisms, communion, marriage, etc.) as called upon
  • Preach at Sunday services as needed
  • Teach cohorts and classes, develop teaching content, and help write weekly Neighborhood Group discussion guides
  • Develop personal reading schedule to grow in faith and ministry/leadership skills
