Overview
Director of Data Engineering - Information Technology
Location: 100% remote within the Bank's footprint (may occasionally attend in-person meetings). Market: Wheeling. Work Hours per Week: 37.5. Employment type: Full-time.
Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Define and lead the strategic vision for enterprise data pipelines and platform architecture to align with business priorities and regulatory obligations. Guide modernization of legacy systems by adopting new technologies and cloud-based infrastructure to support advanced analytics, reporting, and real-time decision-making.
- Data Engineering & Pipeline Development: Own the full data lifecycle, including ingestion, transformation, integration, storage, and consumption across analytical and operational platforms. Design and implement scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and real-time streaming workflows to enable BI, regulatory reporting, and data science use cases. Ensure pipeline efficiency, resiliency, and data quality.
- Architecture & Platform Oversight: Oversee design and optimization of hybrid (cloud and on-prem) data architectures that are scalable, secure, and cost-effective. Define and enforce modeling standards, metadata practices, and architectural frameworks. Lead evaluation and integration of modern data platforms and tools.
- Operations, Monitoring & Compliance: Establish monitoring, observability, and incident response for data platforms. Ensure compliance with data governance, privacy laws, security frameworks, and industry regulations (e.g., GLBA, FFIEC). Partner with IT, Risk, Compliance and Security to embed controls and ensure audit readiness.
- Collaboration & Influence: Collaborate with business stakeholders, analytics teams and IT to gather requirements and translate them into scalable data solutions. Promote data literacy and platform adoption; advocate for data best practices and architectural discipline.
- Team Leadership: Build, manage, and mentor high-performing teams in data engineering, architecture, and platform operations. Manage offshore personnel and promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. Provide coaching and career development opportunities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of ten years of progressive experience in data engineering and architecture roles required, including at least five years in a leadership capacity.
- Experience in the financial services industry or other highly regulated environments preferred.
- Extensive experience designing and managing complex data pipelines, platform architecture, and distributed data systems.
- Strong programming and scripting skills in SQL, Python, R; experience with ETL/ELT tools and orchestration frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with modern data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, BigQuery) or similar.
- Proven success leading and scaling cross-functional technical teams in data engineering and platform architecture.
- Proficiency with cloud-based data platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and hybrid cloud/on-premises architectures.
- Familiarity with enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g., TOGAF), CI/CD, version control, and DevOps tooling.
- Knowledge of metadata management, data quality frameworks, and data lineage tooling.
- Ability to align data initiatives with business strategies and drive measurable impact; strong interpersonal and communication skills to influence stakeholders at all levels.
