Job summary

SafeLease is seeking a highly strategic Director of Data & Analytics in New York City or Austin, TX (Hybrid). The role leads analytics initiatives across insurance and investment management, building processes and teams to deliver timely insights.

Responsibilities include setting data strategy, governance, and scalable analytics, while partnering with cross-functional leaders to drive performance and capital allocation.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in a leadership capacity, managing teams.
• 10+ years in analytics, data strategy, BI, or a related field.
• Proven experience leading company-wide analytics programs.
• Strategic and tactical execution capability; autonomous when needed.
• Strong background in data operations, statistics, dashboards, and governance.
• Experience with investment portfolios and/or insurance/financial services analytics.
• Exceptional communication translating data into executive insights.
• Track record building and leading high-performing analytics teams.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly strategic, hands-on Director of Data & Analytics to lead all analytics initiatives across the organization.

Key Responsibilities

• Analytics Strategy and Leadership
• Lead the analytics strategy, setting the direction for data collection, management, analysis, and insight generation across insurance and investment management operations.
• Oversee and develop a growing analytics function, ensuring high-quality reporting, modeling, and data practices.
• Translate complex data into actionable insights that inform executive decision-making, operational improvements, and capital allocation.
• Drive automation and analytics tooling, identifying opportunities to modernize systems and improve velocity of insight generation.
• Mentor and build a high-performing analytics team while still being willing to execute hands-on work when needed.
• Data Collection & Governance
• Design and execute data collection frameworks, ensuring inputs are accurate, timely, and consistent across business units.
• Build and operate analytics workflows personally when needed, including hands-on data analysis, dashboard creation, modeling, and KPI development.
• Establish data governance standards, ensuring data quality, consistency, and compliance across the enterprise.
• Cross-Functional Partnership
• Partner with cross-functional executives (Finance, Operations, Product, and Technology) to embed analytics rigor throughout key initiatives.
• Own analytics across a portfolio of investments, coordinating data gathering and reporting across our insurance and investment business to drive visibility and performance management.
• Develop reporting platforms that support underwriting optimization, claims performance, distribution insights, financial forecasting, and operational measurement.

Minimum Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in a leadership capacity, managing teams/direct reports.
• 10+ years of experience in analytics, data strategy, business intelligence, or a related field.
• Proven experience leading company-wide analytics programs, preferably in a fast-moving start-up environment.
• Demonstrated ability to operate both strategically and tactically—comfortable working autonomously and rolling up sleeves to execute.
• Strong background in data operations, statistical analysis, dashboarding, and data governance.
• Experience working with or supporting investment portfolios and/or insurance/financial services analytics.
• Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex data into executive-ready insights.
• Track record of building and leading high-performing analytics teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in insurance operations, insurtech, or commercial real estate investment analytics.
• Proficiency in modern data tools (Snowflake, Databricks, Looker, Tableau, Power BI, SQL, Python, Metabase, etc.).
• Background in operational analytics, underwriting data, claims modeling, or portfolio performance analytics.
