Director of Communications – Buffalo Common Council
The Buffalo Common Council's Central Staff Office is seeking a Director of Communications to lead and oversee all communications strategies, public relations efforts, and media engagement on behalf of the Council. This leadership role requires a strategic thinker with exceptional writing, messaging, and managerial skills to effectively guide the Communications Team in delivering impactful and consistent messaging across various platforms.
The ideal candidate will be an innovative and dynamic leader with strong interpersonal and communication abilities. This individual must thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, managing multiple priorities while ensuring the Council’s message is effectively communicated to key internal and external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the Council’s objectives, legislative initiatives, and community engagement efforts.
- Supervise and manage the Communications Team, providing leadership, direction, and professional development.
- Oversee media relations, including drafting press releases, coordinating interviews, and serving as the primary liaison between the Council and the press.
- Direct the Council’s social media strategy, ensuring consistent and effective digital engagement.
- Review, edit, and approve written materials, including speeches, website content, newsletters, and marketing materials, ensuring accuracy and adherence to branding guidelines.
- Plan, organize, and oversee press conferences, public events, and community outreach initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze media coverage, identifying trends and opportunities to enhance public perception and community engagement.
- Collaborate with Council Members, the Chief of Staff, and other key stakeholders to ensure consistency in messaging across all communications.
- Crisis communication management, responding swiftly and effectively to emerging issues.
- Develop relationships with key media personnel, community leaders, and external stakeholders to enhance communication outreach.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, political science, or a related field (required).
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or government affairs, with at least 2 years in a leadership or managerial role (required).
- Strong leadership and management skills, with a proven ability to supervise and develop a communications team.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to craft compelling messaging and adapt tone for various audiences.
- Experience in content development for press releases, speeches, newsletters, and social media.
- Strong proficiency in digital communication tools, including social media management platforms, email marketing software, and website content management systems.
- Must be a resident of the City of Buffalo at the time of hire and maintain residency throughout employment.
- Familiarity with government, legislative processes, or municipal affairs is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in graphic design tools (Adobe Suite, Canva) and experience in photography and videography are a plus.
- Working evenings and weekends on occasions to meet deadlines or cover events and press events.
