Job Summary
The Director of Commercial Construction plays a pivotal role in leading our commercial construction team and overseeing all aspects of our construction projects; ensuring that projects are completed on time, within scope, and within budget while maintaining high-quality standards and compliance with relevant regulations, is responsible for managing all commercial construction activities including oversight of field operations and vendor performance, ensures overall conformance with contract and client requirements, resolves commercial construction problems as necessary, develops performance standards and processes for department employees.
Responsibilities
- Lead commercial construction projects from initiation to completion.
- Develop and implement project plans, schedules, construction budgets and manage the master project schedule.
- Monitor costs and implement cost control measures.
- Negotiate contracts with vendors, subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
- Ensure contractual agreements align with project goals.
- Implement and oversee quality assurance and quality control processes.
- Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with commercial construction projects.
- Implement safety measures and protocols.
- Ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and legal requirements.
- Keep abreast of industry standards and regulatory changes and ensure projects meet or exceed industry standards.
- Maintain effective communication with clients and other stakeholders.
- Provide regular project updates and address client concerns.
- Contribute to the development of the company's commercial construction strategy.
- Identify business opportunities and areas for growth.
- Address and resolve issues that may arise during commercial construction projects.
- Implement practical solutions to keep projects on track.
- Supervise and mentor a team of commercial construction professionals.
- Foster a collaborative and results-driven team culture.
- Research and keep track of market pricing fluctuation and adjust to ensure market is profitable.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field. Masters Degree preferred.
- Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or other relevant certifications can be beneficial.
- More than 5 years commercial construction management experience is required with a proven track record of successful project delivery.
- At least 3 years experience in a managerial or leadership role.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
- Advanced knowledge of construction state laws, standards, and state/national regulations.
- Aptitude for financial analysis.
- Ability to solve unstructured problems.
- Proficiency in using project management software, Microsoft Office, and Google Suite tools.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS.
- Frequent visits to construction sites within multiple states to assess progress, quality, and safety.
- Conducting physical inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Walking around the construction site, climb stairs or ladders, and navigating through various areas of the construction project.
- Regularly using telephone and e-mail for communication.
- Communicating orally with clients, management, and other co-workers, both individually and in front of a group.
- Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information and prepare or inspect electronic documents.
- Good manual dexterity for the use of common office equipment such as computers, calculators, and copiers.
- Good reasoning, organizational, and analytical abilities are required to solve a wide range of business problems.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The job is performed with a significant amount of time on construction sites with busy and noisy environments. Various weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, rain, or wind, depending on the location and season of the construction project. Some time is spent in a home office setting, sitting for an extended period of time. Extensive travel by airplane, train, and/or car to different locations within multiple states to attend meetings, visit project sites, or meet with stakeholders.
