Job summary

The City of Hickory invites an experienced Planning Director to lead the Planning Department under the City Manager's Office, directing current and long-range planning, land use, and development review to support safety, economic vitality, and quality of life.

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in urban planning (master's preferred), have seven years in local government planning, five years in supervision, and AICP certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.

Qualifications

• Seven years of local government planning experience required.
• Five years of supervisory experience preferred.
• AICP certification or ability to obtain within 18 months.
• Bachelor's degree in urban planning or related field; master's preferred.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all planning functions including current and long-range planning, land use, development review, and transportation.
• Coordinate development review efforts with developers, City staff, and the public.
• Advise City Council, Board of Adjustment, Planning Commission, and Historic Preservation Commission.
