Summary of Position & Program/department

The Director for Campus Safety is a full-time, 12-month professional staff member within the Division of Student Affairs, reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students.

The Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of this newly established and evolving campus safety department. Specifically, the Director maintains a safe and secure learning and work environment for all members of the Franklin Pierce University community, as well as guests and visitors. In collaboration with the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director develops, implements, and manages comprehensive preventative campus safety programs, services, resources, and educational initiatives, including personal safety, security operations, fire safety, disruption management, emergency response, transportation, ID card production, and parking enforcement.

The Director oversees departmental responsibilities, projects, and initiatives aimed at improving student safety and wellness and manages supervision of Shift Leads, Campus Safety Officers, and Administrative Staff.

Typical Schedule

This is a 12-month, exempt position designed to offer flexibility and work-life balance, supporting our vibrant residential community. Typical office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Shifts for campus safety staff vary from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 12:00 midnight, or 12:00 midnight – 8:00 a.m., operating 24/7, 365 days. The position may require occasional early mornings, evenings, and weekends to meet departmental and institutional needs.

Position Requirements:

Associate’s degree is required; a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement or campus safety, or relevant experience in a college or university environment.

Certifications in CPR and First Response, Mental Health First Aid, Crowd Management, OSHA, Defensive Driving, and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response are required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire.

Physical ability to lift materials up to 50 pounds occasionally, remain standing for up to 50% of the time, and work in varying weather conditions.

Dexterity for typing and operating office equipment, with the ability to sit frequently.

Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Supervisory or team leadership experience.

Ability to work under pressure and make sound decisions during emergencies.

Judgment and Problem Solving: Must exercise discernment in reviewing assessments, reports, and best practices, and handle confidential information with discretion, especially regarding students’ physical and mental health, in compliance with FERPA. Must respond appropriately to concerns from parents, faculty, and students.

Planning Horizon: Skilled in short-term and long-term planning, capable of quickly implementing new programs aligned with institutional priorities. Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Effective in communicating with diverse campus and community members, including during emergencies, and building relationships with external agencies such as law enforcement.

Impact and Accountability: Promotes safety planning, addresses risk management, and trains staff to uphold institutional safety standards.
