Director of Business Office – Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital

Tufts Medicine, a leading integrated academic health system in Massachusetts, and Acadia Healthcare, the largest standalone provider of behavioral health services in the U.S., have partnered to create the Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital, a state-of-the-art, 144-bed facility in Malden, Massachusetts. Slated to open in fall 2025, this hospital is designed to address the growing need for high-quality behavioral health services in the region.

The Tufts Medicine Behavioral Health Hospital will serve as a center of excellence, offering inpatient and intensive outpatient programs for patients of all ages. Additionally, it will function as a teaching hospital, providing a vital training site for future behavioral health professionals, including students and residents from the Tufts University School of Medicine. This initiative aims to address the regional shortage of behavioral health clinicians while ensuring a continuum of care for patients and their families.

The Director of Business Office will plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and supervise business office activities including the financial counseling, billing, and collections functions for all service lines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Monitor and report on key metrics such as cash collections, days outstanding, unbilled, denials, daily census, etc., in conjunction with the CFO.
  2. Establish and maintain controls for all cash collected and posted in patient accounting system.
  3. Maintain effective communication with third-party insurance carriers to resolve issues that impede cash flow and affect patient/member satisfaction.
  4. Provide staff management, including hiring, development, training, performance management, and communication to ensure effective and efficient department operation.
  5. Maintain effective communication with the leadership team to ensure all third-party compliance guidelines are met.
  1. Select and monitor outside collection vendors engaged in the collection of facility receivables. Review and balance agency reports to system reports and approve agency invoices.
  2. Lead and provide operational directives for all Business Office activities related to claim management and collections of facility receivables, ensuring timely and efficient cash collections to support the overall financial goals.
  3. Define and provide the necessary support and leadership to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  4. Review all statistical reports to monitor trends, determine operational deficiencies, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  5. Work closely with Utilization Review and Admissions staff to ensure proper authorization of patient insurance coverage.
  1. Manage and direct subordinate staff to identify goals and objectives.

  • Perform other functions and tasks as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred.
  • Five or more years’ job-related experience required, preferably in behavioral health.
  • Three or more years’ supervisory experience required.
  • Strong revenue cycle technical skills required.
LICENSES/DESIGNATIONS/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance coverage, and have access to an automobile where required by the facility.
