Director of Business Development - North East US

This is a remote role and requires the candidate to be located in the North East region of the US.

Phlow is a U.S.-based, public benefit corporation that develops and domestically manufactures APIs and finished pharmaceutical products critical to the nation’s healthcare.

In 2019, Phlow aimed to solve a long-standing problem — a broken supply chain leading to medicine shortages vital for life and health.

To address this, Phlow assembled a top-tier team and strategic partners committed to fixing the pharmaceutical supply chain and reducing reliance on foreign manufacturers for essential medicines.

The Role:

The Director of Business Development will focus on identifying and securing new business opportunities for Phlow’s small molecule R&D, kilo, and metric-ton drug substance facilities. The role emphasizes lead generation, proactive prospecting, and building a robust sales pipeline to foster growth. It requires expertise in recognizing high-value opportunities within the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors and converting leads into long-term partnerships.

Main responsibilities include:

1. Lead Generation and Prospecting

  • Proactively identify and qualify new pharma and biotech leads via research, networking, cold outreach, and industry events.
  • Develop and implement a prospecting strategy to maintain a steady pipeline of potential clients.
  • Maintain Phlow’s CRM, market intelligence platforms, and industry databases for effective follow-up and information sharing.
  • Collaborate with Marketing to craft tailored outreach campaigns for potential clients.

2. Client Engagement

  • Conduct discovery meetings to understand client needs and challenges, both in person and via videoconference.
  • Communicate Phlow’s small molecule CDMO capabilities, including development and manufacturing services.
  • Build trust and rapport as the primary commercial contact for prospects.
  • Manage the entire business cycle: lead qualification, establishing CDAs, processing RFPs, proposal generation, negotiations, and closing deals.
  • Foster long-term relationships through consistent follow-up and tailored communication, representing the 'voice of the customer' within Phlow.

3. Target Achievement

  • Achieve or surpass individual and organizational sales and revenue targets.
  • Monitor sales metrics and adjust strategies accordingly.
  • Identify high-value opportunities within the pipeline and prioritize closing efforts.
  • Provide accurate forecasts and reports on sales activities, pipeline status, and revenue projections.

4. Industry Networking and Representation

  • Represent Phlow professionally at industry conferences, trade shows, and networking events to identify opportunities and strengthen relationships.
  • Establish a strong presence in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries to position Phlow as a preferred partner.

5. Collaboration and Pipeline Management

  • Act as the main interface between clients and internal teams (R&D, manufacturing, project management) to ensure alignment and delivery.
  • Coordinate with finance and legal teams to develop competitive, profitable proposals.
  • Provide client feedback to internal teams for service improvement and innovation.
  • Participate in team and departmental initiatives beyond daily business development activities.

About you:

Ideally, you will have 10+ years of combined business development/sales and scientific/technical experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences fields, with at least 3 years selling drug substance CDMO services.

Startup experience is preferred.

Knowledge of proposal development, quoting, budgeting, and managing activities within timelines is essential.

Existing customer networks, positive relationships, and experience in negotiation and execution from a drug substance CDMO role are highly desirable.

Excellent listening and communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate solutions and ideas to diverse audiences, are required.
