The Director of Maintenance will oversee the strategic management and optimization of the company’s owned and leased trailer fleet, focusing on dry vans. This role requires a deep understanding of asset management, vendor management, repair and maintenance processes, and transportation capacity optimization.

Responsibilities:

  • Asset Program Oversight & Optimization:
    Oversee the management and optimization of the company’s owned and leased trailer fleet (specifically dry vans), ensuring efficient utilization, capacity optimization, and cost management.
  • Vendor Management:
    Manage relationships with vendors for trailer repair, maintenance, and sourcing, ensuring that contracts are negotiated effectively and cost-efficiently. Vet and select vendors to ensure optimal service and performance.
  • Repair & Maintenance Management:
    Oversee sourcing, vetting, and negotiation processes with vendors for trailer repairs and maintenance, ensuring quality service and minimizing downtime. Manage costs effectively and establish strategies for preventive maintenance to prolong the lifespan of assets.
  • Capacity Optimization:
    Work closely with internal teams to ensure that trailers are being utilized at full capacity across the network. Monitor asset performance and identify areas for improvement in fleet capacity and efficiency.
  • Strategic Planning & Execution:
    Develop and implement strategies for the management and growth of the trailer fleet, including evaluating asset needs, coordinating with logistics teams, and forecasting capacity requirements.
  • Collaboration with Internal Teams:
    Partner with internal stakeholders (Operations and Production teams) to ensure asset needs align with broader company goals and capacity initiatives.
  • Reporting & Analysis:
    Establish KPIs to measure the performance of the trailer fleet, track asset utilization, and report regularly on fleet status, including maintenance schedules, costs, and utilization metrics.
  • Vendor & Carrier Relationships:
    Build and maintain relationships with key external vendors and carriers, ensuring that service standards are met and opportunities for cost savings and operational improvements are identified.
  • Cost Management & Budgeting:
    Oversee the budget for the trailer fleet and related activities, ensuring that costs are managed effectively while maintaining operational efficiency.
  • Process Improvement:
    Continuously assess and improve the processes related to asset management, fleet optimization, and vendor management to ensure the highest levels of service and cost efficiency.

*Requirements:

Experience:

  • 7-10+ years of experience in the transportation industry with a focus on managing trailers (specifically dry vans).
  • Strong experience in managing owned and leased trailer fleets, including repair and maintenance processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in vendor management, sourcing, and negotiating contracts with repair and maintenance vendors.
  • Proven track record of managing complex transportation assets and optimizing fleet performance.

Education:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, logistics, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience or certifications may substitute for formal education.

  • Industry Knowledge:
    Extensive experience in transportation, logistics, and fleet management, particularly with dry vans and related asset optimization. Experience with large carriers or brokers, specifically in transportation and brokerage capacity optimization.
  • Financial Acumen:
    Strong understanding of budgeting, cost management, and asset life-cycle cost reduction.
  • Technical Skills:
    Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and fleet management systems. Experience with CRM tools is a plus.
