Job description

The Director of Nursing has accountability for the direction, coordination, and management of nursing care and therapeutic services to the residents of The Blood Cancer Health Center in accordance with current federal, state and local regulations and accepted standards of practice. Coordinates the day-to-day execution of resident care policies, procedures, and protocols to provide the necessary care and services for each resident to attain or maintain the highest practicable level of well being. Appropriately allocates and manages available human, financial, and material resources to promote the delivery of quality-focused and cost-effective care. The DON implements quality improvement initiatives and process/system changes as appropriate in conjunction with the Administrator. Provides support and leadership to other departments at BCHC to maximize effective delivery of care and meet operational objectives in collaboration with the Administrator.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Nursing required.

Clinical Cancer Service Line experience required.

Valid RN license in state of Ohio. BLS certification in CPR.

Responsibilities
  • Analyzes nursing and ancillary services to determine the qualifications and numbers of staff required to meet the needs of the residents and to achieve facility objectives. Provides adequate levels of supervisory personnel to oversee and provide care through utilization of established procedures and protocols. Assists in review and evaluation of budget requests against current and projected needs and ensures proper and economical use of equipment, supplies and facilities for resident care.
  • Participates in the recruitment and retention of nursing department employees. Assists in establishing lines of authority and responsibility by defining the duties of nursing service personnel to ensure that department objectives are accomplished. Interviews, hires, and evaluates nursing staff. Provides corrective counseling and disciplinary action as needed in cooperation with Human Resources.
  • Remains knowledgeable about the residents and their conditions through mechanisms such as daily rounds and discussions with direct care staff as well as with supervisory personnel. Serves as an advocate for residents, accepting and reviewing complaints, grievances, and reporting to Administrator as appropriate.
  • Assists the Administrator in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and directing the functions of the nursing department, in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility. Assists with all regulatory surveys including ODH, City of Cincinnati Health Department, JCAHO, and others.
  • Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator as necessary/required, concerning SNF operations. Carries out periodic evaluations of the nursing department and reports findings to the Quality Assurance Committee. Serves on the Performance Improvement/Quality Assurance Committee and other facility committees or task forces as requested by Administration. Establishes and maintains monitoring and tracking systems related to infection control; makes recommendations and implements plans of action to address identified issues.
  • Promotes high standards of care through effective employee orientation. Provides continuing education in cooperation with the Education Department to ensure staff competency. Serves as an advocate for staff, promoting effective working conditions and positive employee relations.
  • Fosters an effective working relationship with other departments to continually upgrade and improve facility services. Coordinates activities of the skilled nursing facility to achieve and maintain efficient nursing services. Promotes harmonious relationships among nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, residents, families, and others.
  • Develops a philosophy and objectives which incorporate the nursing process as the basis for providing quality care and quality of life for each resident. Participates in developing, maintaining, and updating procedures, rules, and protocols that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.
  • Encourages staff participation in formulating departmental policies, promoting initiative, solving problems and presenting ideas to improve care and ensure compliance with federal, state, and city regulatory guidelines and accrediting body standards.
