MHC Mental Health Cooperative is seeking a Director of Nursing to lead nursing services across Middle and East Tennessee. Mental Health Cooperative, Inc. (MHC) was formed in 1993 to serve individuals with severe and persistent mental illness. Since then, we have expanded our services to children and adolescents with severe emotional disorders across Middle and East Tennessee.
Our sole purpose is to support and treat those challenged with serious mental illness and poverty. Although based out of Nashville, we serve several communities across middle and East Tennessee with satellite offices in Antioch, Gallatin, Dickson, Columbia, Cleveland, Murfreesboro, Clarksville, Cookeville, Chattanooga, and Memphis.

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Nursing at Mental Health Cooperative (MHC) is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for nursing services across the organization. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based nursing care while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The Director will oversee nursing practice, drive professional development initiatives, and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to enhance patient outcomes. Additionally, the Director of Nursing will supervise the Learning and Development Lead, Nursing roles, ensuring robust training programs that support staff competency and excellence in care delivery.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Oversight:
Provide direction for nursing services across all MHC locations by developing and implementing strategies to enhance nursing quality, patient safety, and clinical outcomes while fostering a culture of excellence, professional growth, and accountability among nursing staff.
Clinical & Operational Management:
Ensure adherence to best practices in nursing care, evidence-based protocols, and regulatory standards by monitoring key performance indicators related to nursing care quality, efficiency, and patient satisfaction and collaborating with clinical teams to improve care coordination and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Training & Workforce Development:
Supervise and support Learning and Development Lead, Nursing roles to ensure comprehensive staff education and training programs while overseeing the development and implementation of continuing education programs and competency assessments and promoting professional development opportunities and career advancement pathways for nursing staff.
Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance:
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, including HIPAA, Joint Commission, OSHA, and CMS standards, by conducting audits and assessments to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions while maintaining policies and procedures that align with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
Work closely with the VP, Clinical Services & Quality and VP, Integrated Care to align nursing initiatives with organizational goals while establishing strong relationships with healthcare partners, regulatory agencies, and accreditation bodies and advocating for nursing staff to promote a positive work environment that supports retention and job satisfaction.
Leadership & Supervision:
Provide leadership and supervision to the learning and development team for nursing to ensure program outcomes and operational goals are met.
Quality & Performance Improvement:
Implement initiatives (including audit, compliance, and quality functions) to enhance patient outcomes, reduce costs, and improve key performance indicators related to nursing.
Data Analytics & Reporting:
Utilize data-driven insights to monitor performance, identify trends, and drive decision-making to optimize care delivery.
Financial & Budget Management:
Develop and manage budgets in collaboration with the VP, Clinical Services & Quality, ensuring fiscal responsibility while achieving strategic goals.

REQUIREMENTS:
E sse n t i a l S k i l l s a nd E x pe r i e n c e :
Master’s degree in Nursing , Healthcare Administration, or a related field required.
Active RN licensure required .
Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive nursing leadership experience in a healthcare or behavioral health setting.
Strong knowledge of nursing regulations, healthcare quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
E xperience in staff training, professional development, and workforce planning.
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Proven ability to analyze healthcare data, identify trends, and implement performance improvement initiatives.
Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Experience working within behavioral health or mental health settings is a plus.

MHC was founded in Nashville, Tennessee, in response to the need for assertive community-based treatment for individuals who have required frequent inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. Since 1993, MHC has been passionately helping adults with severe mental illness to live quality lives in the community with our state-of-the-art treatment and support. In 1999, MHC recognized the need to support the whole family and expanded services to include children and youth.
We established our non-profit agency by merging three community organizations: Urban Case Management of Meharry Community Health Center, Continuous Treatment Team of Council of Community Services, and Mobile Crisis Team of the Crisis Intervention Center.
This fusion resulted in an innovative, comprehensive, and multidisciplinary approach that addresses the specialized needs of individuals living with severe behavioral health conditions and challenges related to poverty. MHC remains the only organization in the state focused solely on this population.
