Job summary

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc. is seeking an Engineering Director to lead the design, development, and commercialization of high-volume diagnostic consumables and medical device components powering IDEXX's point-of-care veterinary platforms.

This role will guide a multidisciplinary team to deliver scalable, manufacturable, and user-centric solutions in Westbrook, Maine. You will collaborate with assay scientists, systems engineers, and manufacturing to translate requirements into robust architectures,

Qualifications

• Requires MS or PhD in Mechanical, Biomedical or Chemical Engineering or related field.
• 15+ years in diagnostic consumables, medical devices, or related product development.
• Experience in consumable or device design including materials, microfluidics, plastics, or precision components.
• Strong command of design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-cost (DFC) for high-volume production.
• Familiarity with analytical modeling and simulation tools (FEA, CFD, thermal analysis).
• Proven leadership in managing engineering teams and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic and technical leadership by setting vision, priorities, and long-range roadmaps.
• Build a high-performing culture emphasizing innovation, technical rigor, and operational discipline.
• Lead a 15–20 person engineering team with scalable structures and leadership depth.
• Direct and matrixed leadership across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and external collaborators.
• Oversee creation of prototypes, models, and test articles for consumables, devices, and instruments.
• Guide design reviews and provide engineering support across the organization.
• Partner with assay and instrument teams to translate requirements into scalable product architectures.
• Foster relationships with manufacturing, supply chain, and external partners for seamless tech transfer and lifecycle management.
